Reviews
Redwarmin This movie is the proof that the world is becoming a sick and dumb place
Matcollis This Movie Can Only Be Described With One Word.
StunnaKrypto Self-important, over-dramatic, uninspired.
Sienna-Rose Mclaughlin The movie really just wants to entertain people.
Artur Machado After the death of his parents during WW2, the young Hannibal goes to live with his rich and beautiful Japanese aunt in Paris, and there begins to plan how to take revenge on the men who killed his younger sister. The movie suggests that Hannibal's trauma began here when he watched the soldiers kill, cook and eat his sister, which, as I recall, goes against what was said in one of the other films: that it was not possible to classify Hannibal neither as a psychopath nor as a sociopath precisely because there is no identifiable trauma, being just pure evil, or am I confused? The film is very mediocre and was only made to steal the last dollars of the unwary who still follow the franchise. In this movie, in addition to becoming a doctor and a cannibal (as everyone knows), he also learns to be a ninja from his aunt. Yeah, you read that right, Hannibal is also a ninja.Oh well... I'll just rewatch "The Silence of the Lambs" and pretend the rest of the franchise does not exist.
riveramaximilian Just finished watching the Hannibal show and thought I should get into watching the movies in sequence. Hannibal Rising is beautifully shot and shows how Hannibal became Hannibal the cannibal. Would've loved to see an other movie or two during his younger years showing his character develop more. Aaron Thomas did a great job playing the part as well.
SnoopyStyle It's 1944 Lithuania. Mischa and Hannibal Lecter are the children of aristocratic parents. They abandon their castle as the Russians close in. They're caught in the crossfire as they hide out in their country home and the parents are killed. A local militia working under the Nazis turn to looting for themselves. They come upon the Lecter children and does something horrific. Eight year later, Hannibal is haunted by nightmares of Mischa. He's living back in Lecter Castle which has been turned into a state orphanage. He is bullied but he stabs his bully. He escapes to Paris to live with his aunt Lady Murasaki Shikibu. It's a long journey of revenge against those who killed Mischa.I love the kids. It could have been a great horrifying horror. The first thirty minutes are terrific. The movie insists on moving on and on. The orphanage is another possible chapter but it just rushes forward. Thomas Harris wrote this which just goes to show that being the originator doesn't mean being the best going forward. Gaspard Ulliel is no Anthony Hopkins but then again, nobody is. The story simply grinds down and down. This could have been a great little horror with kiddie Hannibal. It is the law of diminishing marginal utility. The more explaining Harris does about the origin of Hannibal, the less satisfying it becomes.
JÄnis Locis Yes, it does not have the vibe "The Silence of the Lambs" had, yes it is bloody and brutal, but that is the whole point, it doesn't need to be insanely complex or psychologically thrilling, this movie is meant to be completely different, this is what everybody was always curious about. We all loved Lecter and his mysterious presence, but for all these years nobody knew how he began his cruel ways, in this movie everything unfolds and it really adds to the franchise. So what that it is bloody? From what we have heard in previous films all of them would have needed to be as bloody as this one, since Lecter is considered to be an incredibly sick serial killer, who also, appears to be a cannibal and that is exactly what is showed here. In my opinion Gaspard Ulliel did an awesome job as Hannibal Lecter, he had the vibe of the older version of Hannibal Lecter, played by Anthony Hopkins, of course. This is a decent way to revitalize the franchise, so we are not out of hopes for seeing a sequel to 2001's "Hannibal", Lecter films are not quick to come out and are all in a strange order as we know, so this lays the ground for a new film, maybe in 2020? Who knows.Overall it is very entertaining, shows us what people were eager to know about Hannibal Lecter, his roots, reasons, etcetera. Delivers suspense for sure, isn't just a blatant killer movie, has decent acting. The only weakness in my opinion was how they decided to incorporate different countries here, but everybody seems to speak English fluently, even in 1952 Russia :D I know it sounds funny, but nonetheless, it is worth watching, that is the only notable flaw.
