Aubrey Hackett While it is a pity that the story wasn't told with more visual finesse, this is trivial compared to our real-world problems. It takes a good movie to put that into perspective.
Dana An old-fashioned movie made with new-fashioned finesse.
znegative The Quiet Ones is (another) supernatural thriller based (very loosely) on 'real events'. The story centers around an eccentric professor who's life work is to try and extract and isolate a poltergeist, from a haunted/possessed person. In this case, the possessed is an attractive young woman. Unsurprisingly, the movie is a mixture of conventional film making and 'found-footage'. In the case of The Quiet Ones',our oddball professor (Jared Harris) and his team hire a young film-maker named Ian (Sam Claflin) to document the experiment. Things quickly spiral out of control, as it becomes apparent that the crew is dealing with a malevolent spirit rather than your run of the mill paranormal oddity. There's really absolutely nothing original about the film aside from a few cool CGI effects, but unlike many of it's other paranormal counterparts (like Insidious or Sinister), The Quiet Ones is thoroughly and surprisingly entertaining. This shocked me because I went into the movie thinking that it was going to suck big time, that I'd have to turn it off after 30 minutes of tom foolery, but I was pleasantly gripped and sucked into the story for all of it's duration. I guess part of what made it stand out from a movie like Sinister is that the story was told through a scientific lens, whereas in other flops like the aforementioned title, The Conjuring 2, and Sinister, the screen writers were simply asking the audience as well as the characters to believe too much. The example that comes to mind is the part in Insidious when the old woman who's some sort of psychic explains that both the son and the father are masters of 'Astral Projection', which Patrick Wilson accepts as a plausible and rational explanation far too soon. If someone came at me like that I'd hit them over the head with a baseball bat!In conclusion, while nothing really new, or particularly amazing, 'The Quiet Ones' is a decent enough paranormal/horror flick. If you enjoyed the Atticus Institute (which was slightly better IMO), you'll likely dig this one too.
Spikeopath Out of Hammer Films, The Quiet Ones is loosely based on the Philip Experiment in Toronto 1972. It involves paranormal research that seeks to prove supernatural entities are in fact manifestations of the human mind. The complete opposite of Hammer's hugely successful The Woman in Black, The Quiet Ones is set in the 70s (Oxford, England). The house the action is set in is naturally remote, though it lacks the Gothic chill required for maximum impact. The makers are more intent on jolts and screeches to get their scares, which sadly gets a bit tiresome come the mid-point. It's effectively chilling at times, with some well mounted spooky atmospheric moments - while Olivia Cooke as the focal point of the "happenings" gives a sturdy and impressive turn, but it feels old hat and fails to deliver on its promise. 6/10
LeonLouisRicci There is Nothing Very Quiet going on here. There are a lot of Jump Scares and Loud Noises. The Overuse of these Cheap Thrills are the Film's Biggest and most Glaring Flaw. The Look of the Thing is 1970's and it could have been Shot On Film Stock from some Archive. The Movie manages the Retro Feel and this adds to the Creep Factor Immensely. In Addition, the Acting is Superb for a B-Picture and the Scares, aside from the aforementioned Jumps are Gripping and have a Docu-Style Gravitas. It's pretty Bloody and Gory for a PG-13. The Movie st Times is Aided by a Realistic Ambiance. It gets a bit Confusing in the Third Act and not all of it Makes a lot of Sense, but the Film cannot be denied its ability to Intrigue with a Complex Psychological/Demonic Possession Story. The Intertwining of "Documentary" Footage inside Documentary Footage Works well. Although the Found Footage that occasionally Intrudes may have been Better on the Cutting Room Floor. At this point in Time, the Overuse of this Type of Thing is Unwelcome.
David Arnold University Professor Joseph Coupland, two of his students and a selected cameraman, are participating in an experiment to prove that people who claim they are "possessed" are actually just mentally ill. Coupland already has a patient in his care, a girl named Jane who's been abandoned continuously throughout her life but seems to generate a strange phenomena. This phenomena manifests as negative energy and takes the form of an infant doll-like creature, only Jane sees, named "Evey". The more the students witness, the more convinced they becomes that there is more to "Evey" than meets the eye, but Coupland is reluctant to believe this, and the more he refuses to believe, the more sinister "Evey" becomes. The Quiet Ones is another of those movies that looks good in the trailers but is actually a pretty boring film overall. For about the first 50 minutes or so, nothing really happens at all, and there are a couple of moments that make you think it's about to pick up, but it doesn't. It does pick up in the last 30 minutes, but not by much. It's not really that scary either with the scares mainly coming in the form of sudden loud noises and other "jump scares". These moments may make you jump, but it doesn't mean they scare you and the film relies too much on this tactic. The atmosphere is quite decent, but this is about the only real positive in the movie for me.One thing I noticed is that not long after the movie started, the cameraman - Brian - was told by Coupland not to look into the eyes of Jane or even talk to her as he didn't want outside interference risking the results of the experiment. Queue the next scene and there's Brian chatting away to Jane looking right at her. Now, if a movie like this is to be taken seriously then there shouldn't be such an obvious story hole, and if it's not a hole then it's just really poorly written.Pretty boring, quite non-eventful, and just a step above a total yawn-fest. This is one that you don't mind missing.
