Arianna Moses Let me be very fair here, this is not the best movie in my opinion. But, this movie is fun, it has purpose and is very enjoyable to watch.
Gary The movie's not perfect, but it sticks the landing of its message. It was engaging - thrilling at times - and I personally thought it was a great time.
evening1 What a joy to view this charming fable again! Don Knotts is wonderful as geeky Henry Limpett. Life is tough for this bespectacled gentleman. He's too near-sighted to join the Navy, like other men in wartime New York City, and he seems friendless but for the fish in his aquarium. Making matters worse, oafish pretty-boy George has the hots for Henry's bimbo of a wife, played with winsome vulgarity by Carole Cook. One day, Henry unexpectedly gets his secret wish -- to chuck landlubber life altogether and turn into a tuna, and take up residence in the briny deep. And it's under water that he's finally able to join the Navy, as a torpedo interceptor, and finally land true love -- with a lady fish who worships his every fin. Oh, bubbly bliss! This movie came out when I was 8, and I was thrilled to be able to tape it and watch it with my 11-year-old, whose father also maintains a fish tank. Given that it was "old," my son was at first reluctant. But he quickly submerged himself in the movie's charms. This film's happy ending sloshes with joy. Just another reminder that impossible dreams can come true if one remains open to life's lucky accidents.
AaronCapenBanner Don Knotts stars as meek bookkeeper Henry Limpet, who is rated 4-F in the early days of WWII. He is married to dissatisfied wife Bessie(played by Carole Cook) who is having an affair with his friend George Stickel(played by Jack Weston), because Henry only cares about his fish. On a trip to Coney Island, Henry falls in water and is presumed drowned, but in reality gets his wish to become a fish, meeting true love with Ladyfish, and true friendship with Crusty the crab, as he helps the Navy fight Axis submarines in the war by using his booming roar as a sonar! Unusual(to say the least) comedy mixes animation with live action to jarring effect. Innocuous film is certainly kid-friendly, but may drive adults up the wall... Still, Henry does generate much viewer sympathy!
Brian T. Whitlock (GOWBTW) This is one live animation movie I don't mind watching over and over. Sometimes a wish came be either helpful or hurtful when it is used. For Mr. Henry Limpet(Don Knotts) it came in real handy. Unhappy in the way he is, he gets a wish which help benefits mankind for a long time. The Nazis are invading the Atlantic Ocean with their U-boats, and Limpet wanted to join the military. The downside, he's labeled 4F by Uncle Sam. So one day he goes out into the dock, and he falls into the ocean. He becomes a fish with glasses! He feels much happier as a fish, and has the sonar power which comes in handy against enemies. He meets a very crusty crab who happens to be a bachelor. Calls torpedoes "torpeedy". Very smart, and resourceful Limpet helps the Navy take out the U-boats. Though married in human-life, he meets a lady-fish who ends up being his new mate since he is a fish. When you get your wish, there's no turning back. Henry Limpet may not have been happy in his human life, but he got to fulfill his life in his new specie. If only he can help clean up the ecosystem right now, but that's another story. A very entertaining story, great cast and wonder animation. This cartoon would make Bugs Bunny have a new pal that lives in the water. 5 stars!
lbrooke-2 I loved this movie as a young child. (I was born the year it was released.) I remember my parents taking me to see the movie. My four-year old grandson just recently discovered it and loves it also. He loves fish and boats and this has plenty of that. He asks if he can watch "Hengry". Last night we watched it twice until he fell asleep. I'm sure we will watch it again tonight and many nights to come. It's a great movie for big kids and little kids. Plenty of action and underwater adventure for the entire family. A refreshing change from most of today's movies. Good clean family entertainment. I wish there were more movies like this.
