Smartorhypo Highly Overrated But Still Good
Platicsco Good story, Not enough for a whole film
Verity Robins Great movie. Not sure what people expected but I found it highly entertaining.
Geraldine The story, direction, characters, and writing/dialogue is akin to taking a tranquilizer shot to the neck, but everything else was so well done.
myspecialparadise Few series actually come together with perfect casting, but, when they do ... the magic gives us a hug that we must experience as often as possible! Basically, anything that includes Judi Dench has to be a winner. The story is that of a young nurse, and a soldier, that meet, fall in love, and due to a lost letter ... after the soldier is shipped off to Korea ... they lose each other for thirty years. The opening of the series touches one's heartstrings and plucks a most brilliant chorus of intrigue. The characters of Lionel and Jean go from surprise, to smiles, to confusion, to jealousy, to even becoming a couple of snapping turtles ... and it is far too obvious that they were meant to be together ... sooner or later! The acting is superb, all around. The writing/scripting is top grade, and it was nice to see that the two characters did not fall into that old parody of "I Remember It Well!" They actually do remember it well! Moira Brooker was wonderful as Jean's daughter, and the only criticism would be that her opening hairstyle did not last ... lots of waves flowing in the air. Changing it to straight and rather lifeless was not on! However, there are no criticisms on her acting.Jenny Funnell plays the part of Sandy, Jean's secretary. She also had problems with changing hairstyles. Her look is quite Sprite-ish, much like Goldie Hawn's beginnings. A little longer in the back would have been a slight improvement ... too attractive to have much of her face hidden by her hair. Here also I have no complaints about her acting. As with Moira, she too was an instant delight.Philip Bretherton plays Alistair Deacon ... wealthy, cocky, and slightly irritating. One wonders if this was no type-casting, he was a little too comfortable in the part. He did have a bit of a problem trying to play the rich man becoming a poor man scenes ... was nowhere near as believable! There is also a particular area of his face that should never have gotten a close-up! That part couldn't possibly have a facial blemish or two! It just couldn't happen! The series is filled with laughs, and unpredictability's ... which is what makes a successful series ... much like "Are You Being Served"! I purchased the complete DVD set ... however, if you are planning to buy the set, be ready to discover that Warner Bros. totally messed up the order of the Episodes! And trying to get them into their proper places is maddening! DVD placements should be ... 1&2 gray and 1&2 brown, are 1992 and 1993 ... 3 and 3, are 1994 A&B ... 4 and 4, are 1995 A&B. The second folder is correct.I shall enjoy this set as time goes by for me too.
stanleybanjo and I am a 60 year old male, disabled Vietnam veteran residing in Estonia. I love the peace, and slow pace, of the plots and the love shared between all of the cast members. I watch this show every weekday of my life , Monday thru Friday, at 2pm, Estonian time, on BBC PRIME. Thank you very much BBC for producing such a delightful and loving show! and I especially thank Mr. Palmer and Ms. Dench for their excellent acting and beautiful love, and respect, for each other. There is a wonderful balance with the other characters and no filth and no social agendas, unlike on the often horrible USA TV shows. ( I have recently seen Ms. Dench in different movies and I must say, I always wonder when Lionel will appear on screen.)
suessanderson I actually just recently discovered this wonderfully entertaining program just this past year when they were running some sort of special about it during our local PBS' usual telethon deal. They always seem to choose their programming VERY well during "their sweeps" (haha), but when I saw it, I couldn't believe that it had been on so many years and I had never seen it. Now, I have a continuous series recording of it via my DVR on the BBC-America channel here and I do NOT miss an episode. Just like the first lady commented above, regarding her husband...DO NOT TALK TO ME DURING "AS TIME GOES BY" OR ELSE!" :) Of course, I can rewind and such, but still....I'm sure all of you fans can understand why. You can miss a second of it and miss the best lines or jokes.I love the entire cast, but I have to be honest here. I was never the largest Judi Dench fan. I liked her okay in movies and the like, but OMG...she is a GREAT COMEDIENNE! I actually like her comedy better than her dramatic works, but now, I appreciate those too, especially knowing her background, training, etc.As far as "Lionel", the kind, loving and adorable husband...he reminds me of so many people, one of which being my father(except my father was a WW2 soldier:), that I just have an utter fondness for the man. They are SOO convincing as a couple....it would not have surprised me if someone told me that they happened to be married in real-life, because their chemistry is just right-on.As far as the rest of the cast, I really enjoy Alistair and then the girls, but the sister and bro-in-law, I believe their characters' names are Penny(Pen?) and Stephen maybe? They are a hoot. Then of course that older couple that I believe are friends of theirs. I can't recall their names as I have just started watching, but I'm learning. They were the couple that helped them in that episode where they donated their time to the "aged" and had a "tea party" for them at that meeting/ballroom where Alistair was the "DJ".Oh gosh...I could go on forever, but guess what! The episodes running right now have all been from 97' and 98'....BUT...tonight, they are running one from 92' apparently before.....okay...I don't like to spoil things, but if any of you are reading this, you know WAY more than I do, so I am sure I haven't typed any spoilers. If I have, I apologize in advance.Anyhow, this show is probably one of my all-time faves of programs-any genre, and I am so glad I found it. KUDOS to all of you britties and your lovely talents.
Charles Delacroix My mother and I have watched this on PBS every Sunday night for the past several years. And we both absolutely love it. The characterizations are perfect, the characters credible and amiable, the dialog VERY well written, the entire series reliably funny and likable and just plain delightful. My mother and I always say at the end of each episode something like this: "They're such nice people ... wouldn't it be wonderful if we could have them for neighbors?" How many characters in either movie or TV can that be said of? I can't find a rating opportunity for this one. Darn. I would give it a 9 out of 10.
