Michael Ledo After the night watchman (Joe Nunez) at Costco was brutally murdered and his skin removed, Evan (Ben Stiller) forms a neighborhood watch in his peaceful Glenvue, Ohio community. Unfortunately not many people show up to join the group and all have their own reasons and issues.Evan- Costco manager. Very straight and needs to be in charge. Takes things seriously, but doesn't take care of business with his wife (Rosemarie DeWitt).Bob- (Vince Vaughn) Likes to drink and share his man-cave with his friends. Has a teenage daughter (Erin Moriarty) he keeps his eye on.Franklin- (slimmed down Jonah Hill) Has the best lines. He quit school to become a policeman. He failed the written exam, physical, and the mental health screening. Wants to be a vigilante. Lives at home with his mother. Couldn't help think about George Zimmerman and Richard Jewel.Jamarcus- (Richard Ayoade) He is from England and has a Korean girl fantasy. The four guys are considered a joke. When they discover the aliens, they get up for the task.I loved the use of the classic rock sound track which included The Doors, J. Geils Band, and Chris Cross who provided a laugh as the phone tone for the salty R. Lee Ermey. The humor rolls with the lines like when Bob asks Franklin, "You failed the police exam, is this illegal?"There was a lot of good humor. Unfortunately there was a lot of unnecessary crude humor, as the story was funny without it. It didn't need cheap laughs.PARENTAL GUIDE: F-bombs galore. Brief sex and nudity
plasticanimalz Too be honest, I'm surprised I liked this, or at least was entertained the whole way through. When I originally saw the trailer I thought it was an Attack the Block ripoff. The only similarities ended up being there are aliens in both. My bad. The only thing that made me consider watching this is when I realized Richard Ayoade was in it. He's hilarious in The IT Crowd, so, watching him could make up for the movie sucking, if that were the case. This ended up being a good dumb comedy. Not rocket science but followed along on a decent plot, had some funny lines and moments, and Vince Vaughn was definitely in one of his better moments, and Jonah Hill's character complimented the group nicely. The writers did a good job of distinguishing the four characters, and the actors played those roles well. Good if you're in a light mood and just want to sit back and be entertained. If you're not a sci-fi fan...maybe try something else. If you're not into a light comedy pallet cleanser to balance out some of the deeper or more complex film / TV, definitely not for you.
bowmanblue The Watch has been getting a fair few negative reviews. Yeah, sure, it's no cinematic masterpiece, but I don't think it's meant to be. It's a comedy full of amusing conversations. There aren't really that many punchlines which will have your sides splitting, but that doesn't mean it doesn't have a certain charm.Ben Stiller leads a neighbourhood watch team that accidentally stumbles across an alien plot to take over the world. Yes, it's as silly as it sounds. Yes, there are plenty of unbelievable moments and yes, there are plenty of plot holes. But, there's also so much right with this film, that I think, if you try, you should be able to gloss over any misgivings you may have for this and enjoy it for what it is.It's the perfect movie to sit down and relax your brain. Let the silly men entertain you and snigger at their attempts to save the world. Plus, for all you horror fans out there, the aliens themselves are pretty decent budget with a few gory moments thrown in for added bonus. It's daft, it's smutty, it's silly, but it's also very enjoyable.Kudos to Richard Ayoade for getting his foot into Hollywood's door. Good luck to him - he shows he can hold his own among Hollywood's comedic A-listers.
Prismark10 The Watch is a science fiction comedy. Ben Stiller is an active member of his local Ohio small town community and a senior manager of the Costco store. When the store's security guard is killed and the police show little interest in investigating the death he forms the neighbourhood watch. However, he only manages to recruit Vince Vaughn, a construction worker, Jonah Hill, who dreams of being a police officer and Richard Ayoade who is new in town. The watch use the group as an excuse to drink and have fun much to Stiller's annoyance. While driving on patrol, they discover a strange metallic orb that acts as a destructive weapon and think it might be of alien origin. They uncover an alien plot threatening the world. The film probably aimed to be the new Ghostbusters but is patchy and falls short. Although there is good repartee between the cast there is an uneasy mixture of gross humour and sci-fi. What should had been a clever action comedy aims for the low brow too often and the humour seems too lazy. Its also saddled with a lot of Costco product placement.
