Reviews
Matialth Good concept, poorly executed.
ChicDragon It's a mild crowd pleaser for people who are exhausted by blockbusters.
Doomtomylo a film so unique, intoxicating and bizarre that it not only demands another viewing, but is also forgivable as a satirical comedy where the jokes eventually take the back seat.
Dana An old-fashioned movie made with new-fashioned finesse.
torstensonjohn If your a fan of down right creepy, psychological thrillers, than this is a straight up mind bender. John Cusack is a strong lead in this film, not a great stand-out performance but nonetheless not bad either. Jennifer Carpenter is truly a delight as his partner. The scene stealer for me is the methodical and unnerving way Dallas Roberts comes across as the killer in this film. Inspired by true events is a tagline for this film and although research was done by this critic no information was found. However, everyday we see the truths behind sex-trafficking and developments of missing girls. So this story hits the truth nail on the head. You are literally left scratching your head at the end of this thriller. I give it a strong 7 leaning towards 8.
ackid-29742 Was cool and should have ended on a happy note. Very disappointing last 10 minutes. From beginning 00:01-93:59, the movie served its purpose. From decent acting, typical "straight to DVD" story-line, the whole 9 yards. Little tough trying to watch Jen Carpenter, without her "Dexter's sis" Truck driver potty mouth. If the movie ended 5 minutes earlier, I think the reviews would have been much better. The plot twist was a nice ending, just could have ended sooner.
SnoopyStyle Mike (John Cusack) is a Buffalo police detective on the hunt for a serial killer. Kelsey (Jennifer Carpenter) is his partner. On a snowy night, his daughter Abby (Mae Whitman) is taken. The killer Carl (Dallas Roberts) collects these girls in his basement to impregnate them. It's yet another dark serial killer movie. It works on that level. Around the midway point, I started to have doubts about this movie. It seems that people were not reasonable in dismissing his investigation. He's making progress, and yet he's always told to get some sleep. It felt like the movie was deliberately putting up obstacles where none was warranted. I can see why people would dislike the ending, but I think it salvaged the movie. It made the middle more reasonable. And it made the movie more interesting. The level of gore is reasonable. In today's world, this is relatively tame. The subject may be grotesque, but they don't show much of it. It's pretty watchable except for the most squeamish.
JockStein Warning!!!! This is a James Wan directed movie! That should tell you to strap yourself in and be prepared for the shock and awe that is to follow. Not familiar with his name?, Think, "Saw", "Insidious", and his latest effort, "The Conjuring". Everything that you would expect from this Malaysian Chinese director is on show. His specialty seems to be showing the very depth of human depravity in all its glory. At times the violence is just too graphic and seems unnecessary, but this is his trademark. If he is going to direct a murder scene then it is going to be bigger, better and more realistic than anyone else's. Frankly, I found it all very unsettling and was tempted to bale out long before the end. I stuck with it though as the story itself was compelling and who doesn't like John Cusack?. The ending will surprise most people, although some might think it improbable. I'm not sorry I watched this movie, just sorry I didn't realize who the director was.
