filippaberry84 I think this is a new genre that they're all sort of working their way through it and haven't got all the kinks worked out yet but it's a genre that works for me.
Roy Hart If you're interested in the topic at hand, you should just watch it and judge yourself because the reviews have gone very biased by people that didn't even watch it and just hate (or love) the creator. I liked it, it was well written, narrated, and directed and it was about a topic that interests me.
Python Hyena The Big Year (2011): Dir: David Frankel / Cast: Steve Martin, Jack Black, Owen Wilson, Brian Dennehy, Rashida Jones: This is a film for every nature, and especially, bird lover. It regards one's passion as three males compete in bird watching for an entire year. Steve Martin is anticipating retirement even though his employees restrain him with business demands but his heart is away from work and into sighting the most birds. Jack Black feels discouraged by his father when he pursues bird watching over a career. Owen Wilson is the champion bird watcher who is having commitment issues when his wife desires a baby. This film is not as funny as perhaps it could be, but it sustains a likable cast and great shots of nature and various bird species. Director David Frankel scored with The Devil Wears Prada, and even though this film is inferior, it goes opposite to its characters being career motivated. Martin's character befriends Black while anticipating becoming a grandfather back home. At one point he misses one of the flights out but ultimately scores big in other areas. Black longs to be a birding champion but he hasn't lost his passion for it. Wilson uses distracting methods to sway both parties away from breaking his record. Supporting roles are unfortunately cardboard including Brian Dennehy as Black's father suffering through heart issues. Rashida Jones is featured as an amateur bird watcher who strikes up a friendship with Black. We are never sure who wins until the end, and the winner only wins by losing elsewhere. It proves that hobbies can suffice when they do not dominate your life. Score: 8 ½ / 10
GEfree I love this movie! Great acting, great writing, beautiful scenery, interesting stories that intertwine. It shows the different family relationships of each main character. Such a healthy heart warming and fun movie. It has it all, romance, competition, friendship, family issues, work issues and nature. I love the ending song of 'this could all be yours someday' with all bird pics. It leaves a strong environmental message that if we want to keep these birds and all the beautiful nature shown in the film that it's ours if we want it. And it sends the message that family and friend relationships are all apart of that future. A really beautiful movie all the way around and perfectly balanced. Nothing is out of place with this one. A perfect 10!
Mohamed Fouda I had higher expectations of this movie. First of all, it's classified as comedy when it's not. The three big stars, Martin, Wilson and Black can do a better comedy than this. I do not object to the idea of being a birdie geek, because everyone is a geek somehow. I had expected the three stars to be more into birds' life. I had expected to see more lovely, fascinating birds that I had never seen before. But that just didn't happen. It was kinda shallow. Just a group of guys go after birds wherever they are to win the title 'Birder of The Year'. As simple as it might sound, it could have been fancier on screen with much more effort. It's still OK to watch. Actually better than a lot of movies - Just don't expect much out of it. It's not comedy. If there's a message to be told in this movie, it's that there's a price you have to pay in order to get what you want. It sends out a message to those who waste their lives going after their pleasure , without paying attention to other important things in their lives.
imdbowley This is not a comedy, but it doesn't mean its not a good movie. Its quite a shame that this is classified as a comedy when its clearly not, its not even about the birds. This is a film about relationships, and how those relationships are affected during this time of the big year, Its a very light hearted film with a dramatic undertone. Its teaches us about life, and that it's a journey, not a competition. It shows the sacrifices people can make to achieve their dreams & the journey of these three men that find more than just birds on this adventure. Some beautiful landscapes throughout this movie and beautiful birds... this is worth a watch but take it as it is. and not a laugh out loud comedy 7/10.
