Stoutor It's not great by any means, but it's a pretty good movie that didn't leave me filled with regret for investing time in it.
Gurlyndrobb While it doesn't offer any answers, it both thrills and makes you think.
Payno I think this is a new genre that they're all sort of working their way through it and haven't got all the kinks worked out yet but it's a genre that works for me.
VenturousArtist Drillbit Taylor follows three tormented friends who desire protection from absolutely anyone to prevent a vicious schoolyard bully from initiating more chaos. However, Taylor must decide between exploiting his services for money meanwhile protecting his identity, the boys, and blending into the school despite being known as an annoying lurker, thief, and beggar. It's no surprise Taylor has a complicated situation but it's merely his fault as with the outcomes among his relationships, interactions, and impending consequences. This especially applies to the main characters who aren't capable defending themselves or being believed when a dangerous individual consistently stalks, harasses, and morbidly abuses them.Despite the film's major efforts to maintain the attention span of its viewers, it struggles to balance comedy, drama, and romance with a seemingly disjointed runtime with some elongated scenes. While some parts are humorous with cheerful moments, others are however dependent on certain characters and subplots that are either useless, unresolved, or unprepared. But so was Drillbit since throughout the film he has a questionable demeanor towards everybody by appearing more as a selfish treacherous recluse than a trustworthy bodyguard, friend, and overall fellow. His actions spoke louder than his monotonous speeches and proved he either deserved what horrific things happened to him or seeking another source to satisfy his greed would be worthwhile.Aside the ridiculous nature with many questionable scenes, the film isn't terrible enough to not be enjoyed but not great enough to be better than what was created. There's some shallowness to the story, as with many characters, at the fault of the conjoined storytelling from three writers including Seth Rogen and John Hughes. The potential to elaborate the effects of bullying and outright menacing behavior by bullies while strategically merging it through comedy and drama are sometimes flat and dishonest. At times it desires being crass and sinister while being lighthearted and romantic but ultimately unbalancing everything due to its restraints on content. Audiences are expected to root for the strangely unlikable Drillbit, and the three hopeless victims, but their relationships remained crucially underdeveloped and sidetracked by other nonsense. It's like watching a fight where nobody is truly harmed until it's either too late or demanded by unsatisfied viewers. As the viewers, the protagonists desired vengeance but were given unreliable protection.
WakenPayne I am sorry but this is a very laugh-less comedy film. John Hughes might be the person known for making such movies like "The Breakfast Club" and "Ferris Beuller's Day Off". He has done some pretty good movies and at times, considering the subject matter - can display some good messages. So I know that he could have done better. But then again he did write the story and not the screenplay so it could be the others fault.First of all the message is awful. For a movie about bullying you can actually create a good message. It seems to be "resort to raw violence because hardly anyone will do anything about bullying and the bully won't face any real punishment." Where do I begin to criticise? I have been bullied myself. If the act is as serious as (I kid you not) BEING RUN DOWN WITH A CAR then surely SOMEONE would look into what was going on. Are they seriously telling me they're portraying every adult figure (besides Drillbit - but even then that's sketchy) as "Oh... you've almost been run down with a car. Well move along I have more important things to do".Okay I was just ranting in that last paragraph so I'll go on. I don't like the premise. Three kids hiring a bodyguard to defend a bully (which even after the kids tell their parents they do nothing!!!!... Sorry, did I mention I REALLY hate how people are portrayed. I just haven't said it enough) under everybody's nose and someone accepts. he seems to be unorthodox and poses as a substitute teacher (I would insert laugh icons for how ridiculously stupid this is but I can't). The Bully continues to bully them and never face a real punishment (FOR RUNNING THEM DOWN WITH A CAR, TOSSING SWORDS AT THE KIDS AND BEATING THEM TO A BLOODY PULP). Then we find out he is not a bodyguard but a homeless man that showers on the beach. When the kids pick a fight with the bully at his house (??? Is there anything in this movie that makes sense?) Drillbit finds out he can hit him without any negative consequences because he is 18.That is a big complaint, the ending. The kids basically walk off into the sunset after the bully WHO TRIED TO KILL THEM MORE THAN ONCE IN THIS MOVIE AND NOBODY DOES ANYTHING ABOUT IT (did I mention I hate how people are portrayed in this? because I don't think I've hammered this in enough). Drillbit knows he can hit him because he is 18 based on the word of a teenager (how does he know they're not lying?) and the bully nearly kills him by tossing a sword at him, A SWORD. It ends with him being arrested and everybody lives happily ever after.Would I recommend this? Only if you want all faith in people like Seth Rogen as a writer to be sodomised and buried. Playing something like this out for laughs could be done, but then again it's produced by Judd Apatow and to expect anything good from him is like expecting deep meaning, symbolism and art-house from Michael Bay and Roland Emmerich.
KineticSeoul When I first saw this movie in theater when it came out, I thought it was a pretty entertaining comedy. All I can say that it does not deserve the bashing it's been getting, it far from being a believable comedy and isn't one of the best comedy of the year. But it's still a enjoyable comedy despite the ridiculousness of everything in this movie. The factor that made this movie watchable is that it just doesn't really get bored. Even for a comedy that takes place in a high school, it's just ridiculous because the set up isn't ridiculous, but the direction is very ridiculous. The story is about 3 students that just started high school who are the biggest geeks, hire a bodyguard since they constantly gets bullied in a comedic manner. And as the movie progresses they start to bond a bit. The dialogue in this is pretty childish but didn't think it was really cringe worthy, in fact I think the negative rating is from how childish and immature the the direction of this movie is. But those stuff just wasn't all that bad in this movie or got me annoyed that much. Yes this movie has a lot of flaws but the main thing is that it's entertaining and very watchable, just isn't anything amazing. 6.4/10
Steven I never would have thought that I'd see director Steven Brill bring us a John Hughes type comedy in the sense that it is a fun movie with a good message. Then I found out that this movie was produced by Judd Apatow and two of the screenwriters were Seth Rogen and the late John Hughes.Owen Wilson stars in the title role. Drillbit Taylor is a low budget bodyguard who is hired by three high school freshman to protect them against a high school senior bully. Wilson does a good job at making this character funny, one we can laugh at, and one that we as an audience can relate to.Brill shows some potential to be a John Hughes type director with this movie. He puts out a good message in believing in yourself. It is worth a watch if you are a fan of Owen Wilson or any of the Frat Pack comedies.
