SmugKitZine Tied for the best movie I have ever seen
Konterr Brilliant and touching
Odelecol Pretty good movie overall. First half was nothing special but it got better as it went along.
Rio Hayward All of these films share one commonality, that being a kind of emotional center that humanizes a cast of monsters.
leplatypus I don't really get into this movie as it's a totally outmoded now with the today cellphones, social networks, etc… The period was not mine either because i was already too old. Thus except Holly and the atemporal parenthood / teen thematic, i don't have other connections and maybe that explains why i was bored ! The image quality was far from good with this blue, greenish look and this family is a big nonsense : if all parents were unable to educate, supervise their teen because they work or because they have a love story, that would be the most shameful excuse ! Sure as a teen, i resented parental check-up, i tried some awkward experiences but this is a prerequisite to autonomy as an adult ! As it's an almost feminist movie (mothers & daughters) and because i feel more nerd, i felt expelled. The only good moment was the shopping because as I went there too and now I can tell that LA isn't as glamorous as we can think : Hollywood boulevard really stinks with weirdos ! At last, it's again a movie in which Holly loses all her charm and i deeply regret her early ones !
JÄnis Locis The movie perfectly showed a very common problem in todays society - peer pressure destroying a life of a girl, who was alright at first, but after meeting ''the popular'' girl Evie her life rapidly went downhill. People with weak characters can easily be influenced like this, completely destroying their relationships with the family and/or close friends, just to look cool in the eyes of the cool kids.It was clearly visible that Tracy is emotionally weak and that she is going to be easily manipulated by her new friend Evie, who was into drugs, alcohol etc., despite her very young age (13). When things got tough Evie was quick to get the blame onto Tracy, despite their strong friendship, well at least Tracey thought it was a great friendship. The movie didn't have that many action as you would expect from a movie of this type, it played more on the relationship between Tracy and her mother, showing that Tracy completely ignored her mother, being blatantly blindfolded and manipulated by her new best friend. Sadly that is a very common problem today, apparently it was more than 12 years ago, when the movie was released."Thirteen" is worth seeing just for the excellent performances of Evan Rachel Wood, Nikki Reed and Holly Hunter, all three of the main characters showed strong acting throughout the movie and that is what was the most impressive about it, the movie didn't have any memorable moments or outstanding scenes, but it had great performance by the actresses throughout, nonetheless.
trixie-k-88 I have loved this movie since it came out in 2003. It is well written, well, acted, and is realistic about subjects most people ignore.Tracy (Evan Rachel Wood) is an average, well-behaved 13 year old entering middle school. While she struggles at home with her recovering alcoholic mother Mel (Holly Hunter), Tracy's main concern is to be liked by the popular girls. Evie Zamora (Nikki Reed) is the queen bee, and after she teases Tracy about her clothes, Tracy steals a wallet to impress her and they quickly become best friends. Evie is a deeply troubled girl who lies, steals, wears provocative clothing, has promiscuous sex, does drugs, and is abused and neglected by her guardians. As Tracy becomes more and more like Evie, engaging in similar bad behavior, her permissive mother totally loses control over her. Tracy is further agitated by her deadbeat dad and Mel's recovering addict boyfriend. Evie and Tracy are inseparable in their dysfunction, and when Evie is away Tracy often cuts herself. Tracy continues to spiral out of control with Mel watching helplessly, and Evie holding her hand through the entire thing. This movie is good, but sometimes hard to watch. I find it very different from other movies because there are no character you ALWAYS sympathize with. You sometimes feel bad for and sometimes can't stand all of the three main characters. They are well-rounded and realistic. It saddens me that people often misinterpret the actions of the girls, who clearly have some traumatic pasts and inadequate parenting, as just "sluts" or that they "just need an ass whooping." It's very clear to see the pain, childishness, and desperate need for guidance in these kids if you pay attention. A must watch for anyone that lives or works with teenagers.
fullhouseo I love movies. Just in general. And I have never shut off a movie halfway through just because I feel all movies need the full run time to redeem themselves. This didn't. At all. In fact, it just got worse. Keep in mind I'm the type of person who rarely dislikes a movie, let alone hates it. Mostly because I only watch movies I think I'd like. That being said, this is the worst movie I've ever seen. To think I could have been watching Family Guy with the time I spent watching this crap. They made cliché after cliché-- it was sickening! I have never met a person with as many problems as the main character. I know people who have cut themselves. I know people who are constantly drinking or doing drugs. I know people who steal. And I know people who will do whatever they can to be popular. THEY ARE NOT THE SAME PERSON. It's like the writers mixed everyone they knew in high school into the main character. Not to mention how uncalled for everything she did was. Unless that girl was seriously bipolar, she had very little reason to act out the way she did. A lot of kids parents are divorced and less, but still a good handful, of kids have parents who date losers. That's no reason to cut yourself! She must have been bipolar or something relatively similar! But if she was, the movie should have said so. But it didn't.And there was one scene where they were snorting coke. Is this 1976?! Can you even get a coke dealer anymore? There were unanswered questions on top of it all, too. The other girl who rats her out. Why did she do it? Was she actually worried? Is she so petty that it was about not letting her stay at her house? And my last complaint was a lack of ending. It just stopped. We don't know if the girl got help. We don't know what happened to anyone, really. I'm sure the filmmakers think it's cool to just end a movie on some kind of cliffhanger, but they're wrong. It wasn't cool and you left the movie on a depressing note that, frankly, had my mother in tears. You can't just end something like that. However, it was in a way the perfect ending. The movie was disappointing throughout, why not give us a disappointing ending?Oh and whoever casted this thing is out of their mind if they expect me to believe that any of those characters are 13. I know you have to fill out a little extra paperwork to get actors under 18, but if you cared at all about your movie, you would fit the part.Jeremy Sisto, I love you man, but this movie was beneath you.
