A Major Disappointment

At first rather annoying in its heavy emphasis on reenactments, this movie ultimately proves fascinating, simply because the complicated, highly dramatic tale it tells still almost defies belief.

portrait of a village. fragments from the atmosphere of Transylvania under the Austro-Ungarian Empire domination. impressive performances. and the art of Nicolae Margineanu to explore emotions and decisions and lost of sense in a story about the fall of lives. the poetry of image. the admirable cinematography. the tension. and Manuela Hărăbor imposing the lead character with grace and convincing art of detail. a film who surprise. not only for its status in the last years of Comunist regime. but for the profound feel to translate the universe of a cultural space in the best manner. a lesson of high cinematography. touching, clear, strange and full of rare form of emotion. must see it. for understand an old way to discover and use the meanings of life.

An interesting and atmospheric adaptation with an impressive cast (Rebengiuc as 'Busuioc', Pintea as his son, Mrs. Hãrãbor as 'Simina', Vişan, Ionescu), the movie has a strong subject—love during the cholera, and it's carefully made, with some memorable scenes, excellently played characters, good cinematography and an alert pace, at a significant level of competence. The village's life is depicted in short and striking scenes—a priest hunting, a retard killed by a machine, the work in the field, etc..Mrs. Hãrãbor, the buxom blonde, gives here her signature role; she was 19 in this movie.
