Reviews
Inclubabu Plot so thin, it passes unnoticed.
Guillelmina The film's masterful storytelling did its job. The message was clear. No need to overdo.
Skyler Great movie. Not sure what people expected but I found it highly entertaining.
Aspen Orson There is definitely an excellent idea hidden in the background of the film. Unfortunately, it's difficult to find it.
dantheman232 After reading many reviews of this film i didn't go in to this film with high hopes, many reviews said the film was like a soap opera in parts and relied to heavily on jump scares. Although the film has many jump scares i found the acting was top notch and the film was not only scary, in parts it was disturbing too.The story starts with Cheng a pregnant woman who is struggling to survive because the father of her baby wants nothing to do with her, Cheng tries to commit suicide but fails and in replacement she gains the ability to see ghosts. While the story has very little to do with the first i still found it entertaining trying to figure out why the ghosts were drawn to pregnant woman. Cheng is also haunted by the same woman who seems to stalk her everywhere she goes but unfortunately this part of the story was predictable and easy to work out, so when the twist is revealed there is no big shock still the story may not be the most original but its still interesting. Now this is a horror film so you will be expecting lots of scares right? well its kind of a mixed bag here, there are plenty of scares throughout and most succeed but a few fail. For instance the bus stop scene i'm not going to ruin anything but this was one of the most effective and disturbing scenes iv seen in a while, On the other hand the taxi scene was just strange and borderline laughable. The film is creepy throughout as ghosts are shown in most scenes but they look like just normal people so this might put some people off the film. I wouldn't let it though because when its revealed why they are drawn to pregnant woman the placement of the ghosts in each scene makes sense and is probably the scariest part of the film. But these creepy scenes don't forgive the fact the rest of the the scares are jump scares, i didn't mind this as they were done better than most Hollywood horror films but the music that accompanied the jumps sounded like something off a video game. Still the film had me jumping out of me seat more times than the average horror film. I would recommend this film to anyone who wants to see horror that focuses equally on story as well as scares. The acting is top notch and there aren't many characters so the few there are, are developed well. The film has many interesting and original ideas but it does steal some from other horror films, still the film is jumpy, scary and disturbing everything a horror movie should be.
dontspamme-11 I am trying to find something positive I can say about this movie...Shu Qi is still cute (except when she is vomiting)...some scenes were laughable to the point of hilarity...suicide -is- a way out, apparently (which by the way, in spite of what the film's producers may think, is actually contrary to Buddhist teachings)....Alright, I give up. How badly starved for entertainment would one have to be in order to find this film 'entertaining'? Most of the fanboy reviews here come across as being written by people who are discovering horror films for the first time. The film pilfers everything from a range of predecessors (The Sixth Sense, The Grudge, The Tenant), but reassembles them in the most convoluted fashion. This film could have been funny, but I get the feeling that script writers took their brain fart too seriously. As a jab against Buddhism, this probably would work to offend (I don't know, since I am not a Buddhist). So, one star for at least managing to accomplish something. The other star is for Shu Qi.
eightate I just watched this yesterday and wanted to read other peoples scathing comments but found some high marks.WHAT??? This was probably the worst Asian horror movie I've seen.*spoilers* There were just so many fundamental problems with the story. A lot of Asian horror has the twist of spirits trying to help but just looking scary (with notable exceptions: ringu and Ju-on). This is the case here except they aren't scary. A pretty Asian woman who looks a little pale isn't scary at all. The "monk" character straight up explains everything as being a perfectly natural cycle of life; nothing scary there either. But the woman just doesn't get it, she would rather kill herself and her baby then let this poor ghost be reincarnated. My friend and I were just laughing when she jumped off the building twice and the ghost waits until after the second time to tell her why she's been following her around. That information would have been nice to know before she started jumping but whatever.*That said I did like a couple of parts right in the middle. First she rides a taxi with a ghost (ghosts ride taxis?) that has a whole lot of extra hair which inexplicably IS creepy. Right after that at the bus stop, well you need to see it as it's pretty messed up.All in all this movie is a total bomb, I gave it an extra point just for those two scenes above. This is a poor quality Asian horror that manages to make ghosts flying into women's wombs almost beautiful while trying to scare you with the same images.
Scarecrow-88 Through the act of attempted suicide which almost kills her(the taking of a large number of pills, after spending all her cash on clothes, due to depression after a bad relationship is called quits), Joey(the superb Qi Shu in an understated, subdued performance)gains the sixth sense and sees ghostly apparitions. Finding out she's pregnant by her past lover(who was married keeping this a secret from Joey), Joey slides into an overwhelming sadness which doesn't bode well with the fear and torment of the scary spirits that pop up everywhere she goes. This one female spirit(Eugenia Yuan)seems to cling to Joey more than any other spirit..who she is will be one frightening discovery Joey would like to have not known. The story is much smaller than the previous film, "The Eye" and much more of a character piece focusing on Joey and her traumatic story with all it's emotional upheavals. There are some excellent jump-scares, imaginative images that you won't soon forget such as the scene where Joey sees her child's face form into the image of the female ghost who stalks her. The film really uses the idea of reincarnation to full effect providing the story with an interesting narrative..spirits cling to the pregnant entering the wombs of women before they deliver eliminating the life they once lived to begin anew. The story might be much smaller in scale, but it's still quite an ambitious project using the Buddhist belief system as a means of telling a powerful story on one woman's acceptance of life through many unorthodox experiences and another who has passed on desiring for a fresh start within a brand new life. This could be the Pang Brothers' best film to date.
