A Masterpiece!

It's the kind of movie you'll want to see a second time with someone who hasn't seen it yet, to remember what it was like to watch it for the first time.

Just like Seal's 90's hit, "in a world full of people, there's always someone to fly". I would describe this movie as both an expression and example of the people who 'try to fly' - and they are usually considered crazy in society. They try different, previously unheard of things, and sometimes it's genius and sometimes it's a dud. But hey, at least they try. This movie is absurdingly complicated in a first viewing, yet it delivers with, yes, absolute style. On a second viewing the themes become more apparent, and this is a movie you'll want to see (at least) twice.Five stories are intertwined, sometimes subtly and others obviously, Tarantino/Ritchie mode, and they all deal with crazy stuff. This is a visual and stylish delight, as well as little bit of a mindtrip. There's symbolism if you look hard enough, but the joy of the movie is the way it deals with different themes - homosexuality, identity, love and death - and shows us that life is indeed a little bit crazy.Recommended. 8/10

I am not usually a big fan of experimental films but this movie is now one of my all time favorites. This movies has everything; action, comedy, horror, romance, philosophy... you name it. With 5 original and different stories to follow, even if you don't like one aspect of this film, another is sure to catch your fancy.Being a Japanese film this movie has the trademark Japanese type humor, so if you are into random comedy, you should enjoy this film. Even if thats not your style of humor I recommend you check out this movie just as a refreshing change from the typical Hollywood styleMost important though, just have fun with this film; I have read reviews that try to analyze and put meaning to the different events of this film. Why do some people always need to find a moral to every story? I suppose there are ideas to be taken away from this movie, but don't try and analyze it too much, just enjoy it.

Well what can you say... just witnessed this spectacle ... completely crazy...yet still manages to have depth. Not everything works , its a little too long but hey !! who cares when you have plot lines which includes a dysfunctional couple (played to the extreme), repressed homosexuality which blossoms at the end, amazing soundtrack (even the cake song was relevant), a man who is mentally a bird due to hypnotism gone wrong, later taught by his his son to fly due to the son's admiration of his father, Vinnie Jones !? who constantly is interpreted by a Japanese sidekick who never once utters a word of English, the worlds greatest actor (T.Asano), set designs that will blow your mind, spoofs of J-horror/game shows/anything really !! ... i could go on and on... not for everyone but why is this not released in the UK. There is so much more than Ghost stories and Miike takashi (he is still amazing mind)... invest in Survival Style 5+... it makes Tarantino look like Renny Harlin

The weirdest thing about this very weird film is how naturally it all unfolds on screen. Silliness become sensible and madness maybe not so mad. First, the set design and use of colour is as you have never seen before, lots of primary colours and wild, child like shapes and patterns, bit like a gingerbread house lit with neon. This crazy unreal colour scheme should alienate but instead like some drug pulls you in. Second, the soundtrack is inspired, not knowing enough about the current music scene I don't know whether these were original tracks or inspired retreads but it works a treat. When the family sing along in the car, to the obscene heavy metal track I am open mouthed. Third, the acting, in virtually surreal situations is perfect, Vinnie Jones is a bit of an exception but I think we have to assume that him performing a cliché of himself and being so rude is a joke itself to the Japanese. I have never and you will have never seen a film like this before and I smiled happily through most of it. Just once or twice where I was wondering just what was happening and the silliness was to the fore I began to wonder whether it was worth the effort but then the fun begins again and the seriousness simmers. It may not prove to be the best film you have ever seen but you really have to see it once, twice or three times.
