A brilliant film that helped define a genre

This is a coming of age storyline that you've seen in one form or another for decades. It takes a truly unique voice to make yet another one worth watching.

A clunky actioner with a handful of cool moments.

I love this movie. We watched it, when it was released on DVD in Australia, not really knowing what to expect. In the same vein as action comedy gold like Snatch and True Lies, there are a load of shoot em up scenes that are ridiculously fun to watch. Definitely recommend for action and comedy fans!

and makes your "Death Wish" a "Sweet Dream" next to Bronson's! This is the sexiest, most ridiculous, fun, sarcastic, action packed, thrill ride of movie you don't want to miss. Clive Owen is deadpan funny, witty and sentimental all in one package, and speaking of packages, then there's the finest product to ever export from Italy, Monica Bellucci, and let's not forget Paul Giamatti in one his finest villain roles. Sure there's some over acting, questionable dialogue and implausible feats of skill, but that's a big part of why this is maybe the best masterpiece of action movie spoofs ever made. "Smith" out Punishes "The Punisher", and the movie is driven throughout with both some fine and silly, yet an unrelenting supply of snappy repartee. The only corny action hero motto left to be made is, that I wish he had outdone Arnold with an "I'll Be Back!, Hasta La Vista, Baby"...to the Baby.

It's meant as a compliment that "Shoot 'Em Up" is one of the strangest movies I've seen in a long time. For its first 30 minutes or so, it's clearly going for a mix of Woo and Tarantino, and Clive Owen has more than one whacked-out way of ending someone. I kept thinking of Jason Statham in "The Transporter". But after a while that gimmick really gets old, and I blame the paper-shredder editing style for taking all the enjoyment out of things. At a certain point, it just becomes an assault on the sense, and this is before the aerial firefight while falling from a plane. There's no masking the disappointment on this one; it should've been a lot more fun. 4/10

In an unnamed U.S. city, a man is waiting at a bus stop, when a pregnant woman runs by, pursued by a man with a gun. With reluctance, the man rescues her and assists with the baby's delivery, while pursuers fire at them, including the gang's leader, Hertz. Our hero, known only as Smith, is determined to save the child and find out why Hertz wants the baby dead. At a local pleasure house, he tries to get help a lactating lady of the night to watch the child, but things quickly escalate, and this sub-nuclear family are soon on the run. A laboratory, gun factory, and presidential campaign are all prominent in Smith's quest for the child's safety........Just to warn the many viewers who potentially want to see this because of its quite prolific cast, the film has no point whatsoever to it, it just consists of Clive Owen shooting lots of people to a quite good song, ending the set piece with a ridiculous one liner, and moving on to the next set piece. And this is literally for the whole film, and it's a riot if you can stomach the absurdity of it all.Was it made to Broccoli that Owen would have been an amazing Bond? Perhaps. Was it made because they wanted the film to continue as a franchise on a games console? It's plausible.Because each set piece gets more absurd as the film goes on, like a level in a FPS, and there are always two prominent characters in each level, our hero, and the scene chewing antagonist, played wonderfully over the top by Giamatti. All the cast are good, but to be honest, anyone could have been in this film, and it would have been just as good, because Owen doesn't really have to try hard, and any seasoned character actor could do an over the top scene chewing role............most have. It's nothing more than ninety minutes of action, with stupid Basil Exposition in-between set pieces. What else would you want from a film called Shoot 'Em Up??
