Reviews
Nonureva Really Surprised!
Matialth Good concept, poorly executed.
SeeQuant Blending excellent reporting and strong storytelling, this is a disturbing film truly stranger than fiction
Sienna-Rose Mclaughlin The movie really just wants to entertain people.
Woodyanders Desperate white trash matriarch Linda Bronco (marvlously played with lip-smacking relish by Sean Young) resorts to criminal means so she can raise enough money for her son Mike (a likable portrayal by Tony Denman) to go to college. Linda joins forces with Mike and his dim-witted pal Lennie (delightfully essayed with supremely idiotic aplomb by Jacob Tierney) to embark an inept crime spree that only manages to compound the severity of their problems instead of solve them. Writer/director Michael Addis ably milks the hysterically broad humor for maximum belly laughs; the gut-busting profane dialogue, constant squabbling amongst the outrageous redneck characters, and the gloriously tacky evocation of the sordid trailer park world they reside in all add up to one extremely funny and enjoyable, if less than subtle and sophisticated, comedic romp. Moreover, the game cast tackle the wacky material with delicious go-for-it zest: William Devane has a ball as shrewd and corrupt no-count lawyer Ron Lake (who has a very impressive beer can art display in his garden!), the always enticing Jamie Pressly struts her sizzling hot sexy stuff once again as Ron's faithless and calculating trophy babe tramp wife Sandy, Jason London likewise excels as the bumbling Brian Ross, and M. Emmet Walsh makes the most out of his minor part as the hard-nosed Judge Pike. The swift pace and right-on rocking soundtrack keep things hopping throughout. Both Peter Kawalski's slick cinematography and the lively harmonic score by Tree Adams are up to par. An absolute hoot.
Crap_Connoisseur Poor White Trash is an unexpected treat. I hired this movie thinking it would either be a gross-out comedy or trashy action film, which was a pretty fair assumption, given the tacky packaging on which Jaime Pressly brandishes a huge gun and even bigger cleavage. In actual fact, Poor White Trash turns out to be an astutely observed, sweet natured comedy about family values. The film revolves around the unusual mother/son relationship between Linda and Mikey. Mikey dreams of becoming a psychiatrist and Linda will do just about anything to help him get to college. When Mikey and his best friend, Lennie, get arrested for stealing imitation beer, Linda and the boys begin a hugely inept crime spree in order to finance his defence and college tuition. Helping them along the way is Brian, a younger man who Linda picks up in a bar.Sean Young makes an astounding return to form as Linda. After stumbling through the 90s in string of bad TV movies, Sean displays some of the ability that briefly made her a major star in the late 80s. Her performance is brilliantly judged, conveying Linda's world weary desperation in a convincing and hilarious manner. Tony Denman and Jacob Tierney show a lot of promise as Mikey and Lennie. I'm surprised that they have not gone on to bigger and better things since this film. Jason London turns in another good performance as Brian, I'm really not sure why this talented actor seems to be stuck in low budget movie hell. It's also great to see former scream queen Danielle Harris as an ex-Crystal addict waitress. Oh and forget the poster. Jaime Pressly's role is little more than a cameo, meaning she only manages to taint the film very briefly with her extraordinary lack of acting ability.Michael Addis deserves a lot of credit for a very funny script, which unlike many recent comedies about "poor white trash", manages to be funny without ridiculing the characters and their circumstances. The dialogue is witty and memorable (About Hank Williams - "turn off that drug addict and put on some Garth!") and the sight gags are generally pretty clever. The film does lose its way towards the end, descending slightly into farce, but the good natured conclusion draws the film to a satisfying conclusion.Poor White Trash is a surprisingly well made film, bursting with memorable performances from a very talented cast. This movie is well worth seeking out.
m-dorff I had no expectations renting this movie other than the description looked funny. But I was surprised how funny it was. The writing is clever, and the story is pretty intricate (I had to pay attention more than I thought I would). The camera-work was OK, but I think for low budget, it was very good. I thought the actors did great, and the characters were fresh (especially the wrestler with a glass eye thats too large). Sean Young will also surprise you. She's pretty damn funny. This movie had an edge, and a voice. Jaime Pressly has a great body... I was jealous. William Devane has never been so weird! He deserves kudos as well. I wanna see more indie films like this. Bravo Michael Addis.
amenichini I rented "Poor White Trash" and laughed throughout the entire picture. It's ranks with other white trash greats such as "Joe Dirt," "Sling Blade," "Wild at Heart" and "Drowning Mona." Really, really funny.
