CommentsXp Best movie ever!
Kidskycom It's funny watching the elements come together in this complicated scam. On one hand, the set-up isn't quite as complex as it seems, but there's an easy sense of fun in every exchange.
BelSports This is a coming of age storyline that you've seen in one form or another for decades. It takes a truly unique voice to make yet another one worth watching.
Nicole I enjoyed watching this film and would recommend other to give it a try , (as I am) but this movie, although enjoyable to watch due to the better than average acting fails to add anything new to its storyline that is all too familiar to these types of movies.
Hellmant 'LEAN ON PETE': Four Stars (Out of Five)The critically acclaimed drama about a teenage boy who befriends an old race horse, named Lean on Pete, and tries to save him from being put-down. The film stars Charlie Plummer, Steve Buscemi, Chloe Sevigny and Travis Fimmel. It was written and directed by Andrew Haigh, and it's based on the book (of the same name) by Willy Vlautin. The film has received nearly unanimous positive reviews from critics, and despite some of it's themes, I enjoyed it quite a bit as well. Charley Thompson (Plummer) is a fifteen-year-old boy, who moves to Portland with his single father, Ray (Fimmel), and gets a summer job there. He starts working for an old horse trainer, named Del (Buscemi), and befriends an old horse he works with, named Lean on Pete. Lean on Pete has outlived his profitability, and he's about to be put down. Charley decides he'll do anything he can to save his new friend. The film is beautifully shot and acted; Charlie Plummer is fantastic in the lead, and who doesn't love Steve Buscemi. It's also a touching troubled youth/animal lovers tale. There's of course the horse racing/animal abuse aspect of the story, that I don't like (being a vegan). It's true to life though, and in the end it's about saving animals from this cruel world, and appreciating them as the beautiful beings that they are. So I liked the movie overall.
Eduardo Melnik I watched this movie expecting it would be about the relationship between Charlie and the horse, Pete. I expected this movie to move me and show the bravery of a boy to defend his friend and save his life. I don't want to write any spoilers but this movie is nothing like that. It's just a very sad drama about the misfortunes of Charlie and has very very little to do about his relationship with the horse. I gave it one star because the movie title, the trailers are completely misguided. It should have been titled "Charlie's Life" or something like that. The plot is extremely slow and boring. If you are expecting the same things as I did, I would strongly suggest you skip this movie.
westsideschl And you thought this was just about a horse. Well, it's about a 16 yr old who goes on a life journey facing many trials & tribulations which do strain credulity and probability. Except for the always positive endings for these type movies it is not close to being a Pollyannish Disney storyline. And to all the one, two, three star reviews yes horses die, dogs die, cats die, birds die and everything else including, astonishingly, people. And, yes, young teens can handle this movie for it's many life lessons.
realityinmind Horse racing in Portland? Sure. That is akin to cattle farming in Alaska, or snowplowing in New Mexico. This movie was written and directed by British people who know nothing about Portland Oregon. Horse farming in Portland is niche and is solely owned/operated by families... people do not move to Portland to care for horses. They might move to outlying areas in Oregon and hope to be able to work on a farm with migrant workers for less than minimum wage, but they don't do what this story implies. Another example of a great story being filmed in a city where the inhabitants are so in love with themselves that they rate anything filmed in the city 110%, especially if it sucks. Now I'm not saying the movie is horrible... I'm just saying that this is a British film, screened in British/European film festivals with Australian and British actors (and friends of Buschemi from Boardwalk Empire) and that one chick from Kids, that is filmed in Portland Oregon where a story like this would never ever take place, by people who don't know anything about the region geographically or culturally. And simply because the film takes place in Portland Oregon all of the Hollywood elitists and liberals couldn't possibly do anything less than rate this movie a 7+/10.Just because the book is good, the story is good, a couple of the actors are good, and the city is favored by the people who attend film festivals, does not mean that the movie is good. If you set your story somewhere that is not realistic, then you can't expect your story to be taken seriously. Especially 7+/10 seriously. I give it a 5. And I'm sure that it will be closer to that within a few years when the hyped-up ratings die down.
