Reviews
Pluskylang Great Film overall
Clarissa Mora The tone of this movie is interesting -- the stakes are both dramatic and high, but it's balanced with a lot of fun, tongue and cheek dialogue.
Bessie Smyth Great story, amazing characters, superb action, enthralling cinematography. Yes, this is something I am glad I spent money on.
Mehdi Hoffman There's a more than satisfactory amount of boom-boom in the movie's trim running time.
Pjtaylor-96-138044 'Hummingbird (2013)' is a humdrum hop into the type of weakly written, poorly acted and crudely choreographed bare-bones action-flick that Jason Statham has made more than his fair share of, except here even the action is muddy at best and most of the piece is pretty much entirely forgettable. There are a few odd plot strands which serve to bore more than bemuse, but it's the lack of engagement or even really excitement that kills any enjoyment that could be found in the relatively slow and dull picture. A poor attempt even by these standards. 4/10
fmilder-533-34251 Redemption (Hummingbird) has all the feel of a novel that has been made into a movie (it isn't). An emotionally scarred veteran of the UK war in Afghanistan now lives on the streets in London, when a mix of circumstances provide him with a second chance. He's hardly pure however, and the movie includes a fair amount of questionable decisions and violence, as well as much temptation for a nun. The movie easily holds your interest, and it is thoroughly watchable. The drawbacks? It has a bit of a "Haven't I seen this before?" to it, especially when Statham serves as a driver, or flexes his muscles against multiple opponents. And there are times when you say to yourself, "Gee. Would that character really have done THAT?" But these are actually modest quibbles. The decisions faced by both Statham, and Agata Buzek, as the nun, are genuinely interesting, and writer/director Steven Knight more often than not chooses a unexpected resolution to the problems faced by the characters. I'd give this a 7.5, which I rounded up to 8 for IMDb scoring purposes.
lois-lane33 Many films I see these days are too close to being on the level of a boiling excrement experiment to even be called movies at all. This was a departure from that-it was a decent film. Good originality shines through making it a watchable deal without making you feel like your being exposed to something harmful to your health. Jason Statham films tend to be not bad-with the exception of Crank: High Voltage which I thought was a bad case of stoned screen writers. Not a lot to say about this one other than it was a good film-I don't want to give away the plot line as that would spoil it. The other day I was looking at some of the budgets for big films in general these days-many big films cost something like 100 million to make and then maybe make a return of 120 million. They are also generally films I don't like. This movie looks like it had a decent budget-but nothing over the top like many others-where filmmaking becomes a case of elitism wins the day-too bad there are not more films with 1-5 million dollar budgets that actually utilize good scripts and make money well above what they cost to make due to the fact they are intelligently executed as opposed to something that comes off like it was done by a rhesus monkey. Way too many films these days make a marginal return on a gargantuan investment. Some big budget films don't even make back their creation costs at the box office-but they keep making them anyway. It's not the way to go. See this film-you will probably like it.
Adam Peters (69%) A more dramatic change of pace for Mr Statham resulting in a better than expected crime drama. The direction is rock solid with fantastic use of neon light, and the main characters are nicely fleshed out with real back story along with haunting tragedy that works well in pushing forward the choices they make and the people they are. All-in-all a very well put together production, despite a few minor niggles with its slightly overworked plot, but I'd still put it amongst hard-man Jason's best performances as well as his better films in general, although those expecting an all-out action movie better look elsewhere as this is mostly a drama, and a very good one at that. P.S "Hummingbird" is a much better title for this movie, so why it's also called the rather bland "Redemption" I have no idea. I'll stick with calling it Hummingbird.
