Livestonth I am only giving this movie a 1 for the great cast, though I can't imagine what any of them were thinking. This movie was horrible
Hulkeasexo it is the rare 'crazy' movie that actually has something to say.
rdii ...I have to say that it does strain credibility that two such young, erotically handsome, and obviously virile men took so long to mate. Eugenio's modesty and reticence might well fit in Proust's novel, but TODAY? Then again, Eugenio suppressed (no doubt under the weight of the dead dogmas of Roman Catholicism and possibly familial strictures) his natural and healthy instinct. Then, too, his protracted hesitancy lends the plot, indeed, defines the plot as one of suppressed longing, as it evolves, molto lento. The film deserves high praise in all categories. Not much dialogue, thank goodness, for, when they do have substantial remarks, the subtitles flash by too quickly for me to read. And the subtitle industry needs to learn that white letters on a white or pale background are UNREADABLE.
jaroslaw99 I read many glowing reviews about this and was very disappointed. This movie made so little sense in many ways. I can't write a review without spoilers. OK this was supposedly a romance and the men hadn't seen each other since childhood. Indeed they didn't even recognize each other. Rather than have so many extra long shots where one or both leads are staring at who knows what, and sparse dialogue, how about more reminiscing and/or playing catch up and maybe the audience would have a clue why they fell in love. The stoning of the cat with no remorse was really distasteful to me and invalidated their supposed sensitivity. There was way too much "cat and mouse" with the physical stuff too. Eugenio places Martin's hand on his heart after the run and....nothing. They play around in the lake doing touching things straight men would not likely do and....nothing. Martin stares at Eugenio's crotch several times, they finally end up in bed together, albeit after partying, Eugenio rubs Martin's crotch (over his pants) and....Martin gets out of bed.FINALLY at almost the end Martin kisses Eugenio, and Eugenio just repeats "no". Why? No explanation here. Somehow in the remaining few minutes they reunite, also no explanation. So the photography and scenery were very nice; both leads attractive esp. Martin although Eugenio needed a different style of glasses. Here's an idea - why not interview several long term Gay couples and make a composite romantic story instead of illogical plots like this one?
euroGary Young(ish) writer Eugenio returns to his childhood home in a small Argentine town. At the same time, another of the town's prodigal sons also comes home: Martín, searching unsuccessfully for a long-lost relative. Homeless and short of funds, Martín starts doing odd-jobs around town and eventually knocks on Eugenio's door, looking for work. It transpires the pair knew each other as children and it isn't long before they are reliving happy childhood memories such as, er, stoning a cat to death. But Eugenio is homosexual and through his actions (spying on Martín in the bathroom; buying him clothes) it is clear he's hoping for more from the relationship than animal abuse. What will Martín's reaction be?I could have done with director Marco Berger pulling back the camera at times; he loves the close-up so much that we never get an idea of how big are the house and grounds that much of the action takes place in because we never see so much as a single wall in full shot (this also means that in the few, mostly out-of-focus, incidences of nudity it's impossible to tell whether the viewer is seeing actors Manuel Vignau and Mateo Chiarino or uncredited body doubles). And the amount of shots that seem centred on Messrs Vignau and Chiarino's crotches is bordering on embarrassing. But the two leads do a nice job of portraying a growing relationship that seems based mainly on friendship rather than repressed desire; indeed (MAJOR SPOILER ALERT!) I'm rather glad we didn't see them consummate their relationship; somehow, that would have spoiled things.
bjk1961 I couldn't be happier! Marco Berger touched my heart again with this winning dramatic romance between two timid individuals, unsure of life and love. "Hawaii" makes the perfect addition to the collection of Marco Berger's offerings. Be sure to catch them all. They make a perfect film festival all by themselves."Hawaii" lays out the day to day interactions between Eugenio (played by the unconventionally handsome Manuel Vignau, "Bruno" from "Plan B") and Martín (played by Mateo Chiarino) that build a budding romance neither knows how to address. Tension builds until, finally, a fateful kiss that changes everything. I spent the rest of the movie repeating the mantra "please, please, please, please" for the perfect ending. See if I got my wish...
