Reviews
Sharkflei Your blood may run cold, but you now find yourself pinioned to the story.
Melanie Bouvet The movie's not perfect, but it sticks the landing of its message. It was engaging - thrilling at times - and I personally thought it was a great time.
Michelle Ridley The movie is wonderful and true, an act of love in all its contradictions and complexity
Celia A great movie, one of the best of this year. There was a bit of confusion at one point in the plot, but nothing serious.
Anish George Dear Priyan Sir,With all due respect,When you want to take an investigation movie, why do you lent some one else's Doctor Sunny Joseph? I would have rather taken one of your own police heroes (May be Unnikrishnan from Vandanam)? Doctor Sunny Joseph is here to treat patients, not to investigate some one else's murder. Also when you want the heroine to perform so much expressions, don't you think you should put a bit more effort in choosing a right lady for the role? Did you forget a process called 'Sceen Test'?I gave rating 2. One point for Mohanalal's screen presence, and one for the doore doore song. Rest all is ridiculously bad.....
Jose Tinto What can you expect from a man who made his life by shamelessly plagiarizing other's works? He tried almost every form of copying from foreign movies to Malayalam, Malayalam to Tamil, Tamil to Hindi, Malayalam to Hindi and now he tried a new thing; Malayalam to Malayalam. Yes you read it right; he took the story from Nadiya Kollappetta Rathri (2007) and replaced the cop with doctor, Sunny Joseph Manichithrathazhu (1993) in it. Yes, Geethanjali is ready!Geethanjali is so lazily made that you would wonder how a legendary actor like Mohanlal could even think of accept such a role to make a come back of Dr. Sunny? The visuals, other performances and the music are pretty ordinary as well.Overall, it's just an another cluttered film that bites the dust. Miss.
PimpinAinttEasy Dear Priyadarshan, I really felt for the actors - legends like Mohanlal and Innocent and even solid character actors like Ganesh Kumar and Siddique. This is the kind of movie that belongs in the dark ages of Malayalam cinema, when dialogs used to be written on the sets. Innocent tries desperately to evoke laughter in the films blatantly obvious comic track. Lalettan's role is the kind which he could perform in his sleep and he does sleepwalk through it.The story itself was pretty interesting (though i heard it was copied from a Thai film). Some of the thrills are alright. But the awful comedy track and the ridiculously placed songs make this one tough to watch.I guess this is the end of the Dr.Sunny Joseph franchise. At least for a while. Best Regards, Pimpin.(3/10)
Tejas Nair Manichithratazhu or The Ornate Lock was one of the 90s' few hugely dramatic & immensely popular movies that it was remade into almost all Indian languages. Mohanlal over-acted in it, but was funny & gave birth to a lovable character. So did Innocent and the rest of the supporting cast. It was both funny & horrid at the same time.Come 2013, and this spin-off looks just like a gimmick to attract people who follow the cast & the setup of the 90s' hit. But, let me assure you, it is nowhere near it; not in story, not in cast performance, not in humor. The first 30 minutes are used nicely to construct a base for the story which is tremendously similar to another hit film, "Nadiya Kollapettu Rathri" which was brilliant. I won't go into details, but the story fails as some parts of Manichitratzhu are blindly sampled here, with the climax revelation scene so uncanny. Investigating a haunted house reveals a strange, predictable story about the people living in it. The cat-mouse chase begins as was previously seen last year in "Grandmaster."Mohanlal isn't funny anymore. His dialogs and actions did not only make me despise him but also descent him from my favorites lists. Siddique's is the only plausible character. Newcomer actress has her first and the last film here. Nishan was fine.I might have chuckled 3-4 times throughout the long 140-minute film, which has not a single strand of newness in it. The story is stitched from parts borrowed from other similar themed movies which reduces the overall effect. Additiong of unnecessary and annoying songs in-between, cheap use of CGI, horrible make-up and high number of useless characters makes this undeniably an example of improper filmmaking.BOTTOM LINE: Priyadarshan has lost his charm. I cannot say that for Mohanlal looking into the fact of Dhrishyam being a hit and all. But, Geethanjali is a poor show, per se.Can be watched with a typical Indian family? YES
