Reviews
Merolliv I really wanted to like this movie. I feel terribly cynical trashing it, and that's why I'm giving it a middling 5. Actually, I'm giving it a 5 because there were some superb performances.
ChanFamous I wanted to like it more than I actually did... But much of the humor totally escaped me and I walked out only mildly impressed.
Cody One of the best movies of the year! Incredible from the beginning to the end.
Janis One of the most extraordinary films you will see this year. Take that as you want.
one-nine-eighty Craig "Dan from Eastenders" Fairbrass and Danny "Fahkin" Dyer star in a poor mans '28 Days Later' fast moving brainless zombie film set in London. Its the standard story of science experiment gone wrong causing widespread zombie infection, a group of survivors have to find away to escape after dealing with their own personal situations. The narrative is duller than dishwater and the acting is like somebody hand made marionette puppets and flung them around in front of a camera - it is that wooden. The zombies were fast and acrobatic so you'd think there may be some empathy shown towards the survivors but in truth I didn't actually care, Danny Dyer plays the same "can't be arsed" pseudo hard man he does usually so I struggled to care for him, likewise Fairbrass. Sean Pertwee's cameo is quite amusing but it's far too short, as he 'legs it' into the boat I kept hoping to see him again but alas not. There are a few moments that made me laugh but I'm assured the film was supposed to be serious, in that department it failed, more lame duck than happy quacker. The zombies in the film are quicker and cleverer than the story, this was unoriginal, unconvincing, and unamusing. This maybe a good film to anyone new to the genre but hardened zombie fans won't be excited.
Theo Robertson It's interesting how influential Danny Boyle's 28 DAYS LATER was . It wasn't apparent at the time but from that point onwards each and every zombie film must feature zombies , sorry "infected" who can outrun Usain Bolt while having the endurance of a marathon runner . It's also noticeable how many zombie films there are with a massive number of short films and films on The Horror Channel featuring zombie apocalypse . Perhaps most notciable of all is how poor most of them are . and with hindsight Boyle's film was much better than I thought it was on first viewing . This inspiration called DEVIL'S PLAYGROUND is better than most of its peers but that's probably down to a simple reason it's a conscious rip off from Boyle's original In its favour and considering its cast it'd be a very easy route to take and treat as a Lads Mags horror comedy with lots of nudge nudge wink wink humour testing the patience of its prospective audience . One thing I did like was the dead pan serious tone and while it's hardly big budgeted it does its utmost best to paint a convincing infected outbreak that took place unseen in 28 DAYS LATER . One of the rejected plots for 28 WEEKS LATER was having a SAS platoon rescuing the Prime Minister from the infected outbreak and once you're aware of this rejected screenplay you're able to see how this scenario would have played out on screen . Replace the PM with someone who has a possible immunity to the infection and replace the SAS platoon a more diverse group and you're left thinking that Boyle and Garland got it riht with the version of 28 WEEKS LATER that did make it to the cinemas . Not to be too hard DEBVIL'S PLAYGROUND it's much more enjoyable than I expected it to be and has been one of the better films The Horror Channel has shown recently
Jon Doe I like to watch an occasional zombie flick here and there. Even after 30 years of watching these movies and seeing every different type of zombie film done every way over and over it becomes hard to find one thats enjoyable. I actually found this movie enjoyable and suspenseful at times. The actors were good and some of the effects were great for a low budget fare. I really don't understand people comparing this to 28 days later or Resident Evil as if anything those movies are copies of older zombie movies done a hundred times over. Their budgets and actors are all them set them apart except for 28 days later which just was a great new concept of story telling using an old genre. This doesn't take away from the movies greatness though don't get me wrong. The thing with zombie films is you cant really call them ripoffs because they are ALL ripoffs if they came out after 1985. The zombie genre has continually beaten to death for decades and the genre will continue to keep spewing out more so please stop using that terminology of this is a copy of that. Its a zombie flick! You either like it or you don't.
bbsalamander Zombie Pacur ? New enhancement drugs unleash a zombie plague the likes of witch you have never seen. The zombies in this movie do run, jump, climb up walls, bust down doors and jump Through windows, but hay I love zombies and bought it hook line and sinker. I do like my zombies to move at a normal pace and not any faster then 28 Days for sure. I have read about zombie fans who have to have the slow shambling zombies but I go by the idea of a fit recently dead person should be able to movie as fast as a normal person but in my zombie world you can not do super human feats just because you change over to the living dead. The lead actor (Craig Fairbrass) who I have seen in other films is a great tough guy and is for sure the man I want on my side. Good cast and there struggle to survive kept me smiling as the body count rose. Some nice gore and the fast pace of flesh eating make it well worth a look in my mind.
