Tom Tinney I had watched these when they first came out. I recently re-watched them on HULU. If I had seen the series first, by itself, and not known about the world the Jim Butcher had created in the Dresden Files, I'd have been okay with the series. I probably would've even enjoyed it more. If I'd seen the TV show and then read the books, I'd have appreciated that the show brought me to the books. That was not the case.Unfortunately, the writers, producers and directors strayed so far from the books, characters, magic, and mantra, that they created a poor interpretation, ignoring what made the books so great. I hope they try again, someday, but with each book becoming three 1.5 hour shows. Or, they could take the "Side Jobs" approach to a series and never really do the books, except as full blown blockbuster movies. Now that's a good idea.

conjh13 So after reading many of the books, I finally got around to watching this show. Sadly, it's all too obvious to me why it only lasted a season.Normally when I watch a book-to-film adaptation, I prefer they keep it as close to the books as possible, even with word-for-word conversations if possible. In this case, I was prepared to give it a lot of leeway, expecting episodes where even the events are wholly different from the books. That I would have been OK with.The problem is, the show is just nothing like the books, in any way. None of the characters are similar (including Harry himself). The feel of the show is completely different.The Harry of the books is tall, snarky, sarcastic and tough. He's a total bad-ass, who wears a big black leather duster and generally carries a .45 or whatever other handgun he has available in his pocket, while wielding a big staff that barely fits in his banged up old Beetle.In the books, Murphy is a very petite, smart-as-a-whip fireball with a softer side she doesn't like to show.As for the feel, the books are far more detective noir, with a lot of insane action thrown in, none of which is present in the show. As I said before, Harry's a bad-ass. He's far more likely to be slinging fireballs than breaking out of jail and leaving behind an illusion. Heck, he's not even *good* at illusions.I'm just left completely dumbfounded as to why they even tried to rewrite it for the show, because there's so much more going on in the books. Usually, the *reason* they don't stick too the books too much is because there's not enough action. In this case, the show actually has less action than the books. It's pretty sad.I give it a 5/10, which is pretty darn generous considering what it should have been.

bigkooz3 I've read a couple of Butcher's books. I've watched the series. I thought that the series wasn't that bad - and it took on a life of it's own. I've read comments from other reviews saying that the acting "was cookie cutter" - but I challenge you to look at the acting of a pilot in ANY series (sitcom, drama, etc)- and then review it a few years down the road... You will find that the cast of any series will be better after working around each other for a period of time - and this would've been no different (had it be given the opportunity). IN MY OPINION: ANY Dresden is better than NO Dresden. It's sad to see this series go away before given the chance to take off. I never even knew this series was around - and I watch the SyFy channel all the time. It's disappointing that they didn't advertise more.

Gunnar Graver Bought the whole season after reading the first 8 books of the Dresden Files, and I must say: This is completely and utterly crap! I really can't understand why anyone who actually read and liked the books will find any remote interest in this show. It has nothing to do with the books what so ever. Everything is changed, and I mean absolutely everything. One can understand limitations concerning budget and so on, but this really won't do. Deviations to better adapt the books to television always happen, but really... What they have done here is more in line of creating Harry Potter where Harry instead were named Harriet and she went to boarding school in Romania... They also managed to fill the ethnic-quota...that means of course Morgan.(Anyone remember Kingpin in Daredevil?) Obviously nothing wrong with that, except Morgan is NOT a black man.In my opinion the ones who wrote the scripts for this obviously haven't read a single book. They tried to make a cross-breed between x-files and Buffy, and in that they probably succeeded, but this has nothing to do with the Dresden Files.Hopefully someone wants to take this to the big screen, and maybe, just maybe they'll do the books justice. Give this to Peter Jackson and I'm sure he'll make it perfect.
