The show is at its best when the characters have to face the consequences of their asinine behavior, or trauma of on-the-job events. Unfortunately that doesn't happen often enough.The comedy is sometimes on-point, but more often it is sophomoric and cheap, too easy and obvious; it seems the writers don't know what to do. The comedy becomes filler, instead of growing out of the situation or the characters; the equivalent of a cartoon pie fight. Outrageous plots overrule character development.When the show is good, it is very good, but you have to sit through long stretches where characters are not believable, and plots are set up to deliver a joke. With few exceptions, the characters rarely learn; they seem stuck in sixth grade. Once in a while someone shows some depth, but that depth rarely sticks; by the next episode they are back in sixth grade mode. I would not want to hang out with these people.

Rescue Me is an amazing show that is a powerful meditation on post 9/11 society and a tribute to the hard work and service that firefighters do every day. It is a bold show that touches on risky topics that TV shows rarely touch on these days(looking at you Disney Chanel). It features some of the best writing and cinematography in modern TV shows. It also perfectly blends fleshed out characters, humour, and great performances including Denis Leary who also created and co-wrote the show exhibits perfect writing skill as well as dramatic and comedic range as Tommy Gavin and he should have won a Golden Globe for his efforts. Rescue Me is a great watch for any mature audience.

With witty dialogue, relatable characters and a perfect mix of comedy and drama, this is truly a spectacular show. I started watching it this summer on a whim, having heard about it several times and never getting around to viewing it. I was a bit surprised and delighted to find Rescue Me to be a real treasure. Being from the West Coast, I don't know much about New York and firefighter culture, but I still find myself relating to and rooting for several of the characters. Dennis Leary is a better actor than I thought, and I can tell he put his whole heart and soul into the show. That being said, I do have one complaint: you can totally tell its Leary's show because he's always getting the really attractive women and winning every fight he gets into. This doesn't really bother me though. In fact, I think it's kinda funny. Overall, this show is spectacular, and I wish it was more popular. It's the perfect show to get addicted to and watch relentlessly.

Up until season 3 in the series, I was actually very impressed overall with Leary's series. It was gritty, raw, humorous and always dramatic, with realistic ties to the climate of NYC at the time. One thing that bothered me early on was the dismissal/joking around about Mike being raped by the couple he was invited around by in season one, I was willing to let it go.And then, season 3, episode 4 (Sparks) happened.Tommy rapes Janet - a woman who is slugging you as you violently push her down and rip her clothes is NOT consenting. But then, surprise, the moment his magic schlong is in her, she moans and enjoys it and is able to calmly read a magazine afterwards when Johnny walks in moments after Tommy's departure. This trivialization of rape as a plot device continues, as Janet 'rapes Tommy' to get even, and Sheila roofies him to get his spunk and have her way with him as well.Leary, I pray no one in your family has to ever deal with rape, knowing the nonsense you produced in this series. I'm done.
