Nicole I enjoyed watching this film and would recommend other to give it a try , (as I am) but this movie, although enjoyable to watch due to the better than average acting fails to add anything new to its storyline that is all too familiar to these types of movies.
your_friendly_reviewer Good:-the acting is way over the top.-the fight scenes are pretty darn good.-the soundtrack is cheesy making it hilarious.Bad:-not many know of this movie-people with no sense of humour will rate this lower than it should.Overall:Watching this movie requires a sense of humour, I can't stress that enough. If you watch this with friends you'll end up with lots of jokes to share.Notes:The scene where Billy Blanks uses a pole to hit Jake and ends of lifting him up out of danger. Pay attention to Jake's face. HAHAHA!Prang (his fighting coach) is a sicko. He loves monkeys and encourages Jake to have lots of sex before big fights LOL. Terrible coaching. Why blow up the bamboo thunderdome??
jimminysnickety This movie i caught by accident back in 1990. This movie has got a kick-ass soundtrack for its fight montages and opening scenes. The acting as most reviewers have said is quite poor but hey! that's not what matters. It's got to be the awesome moves achieved by the protagonist and nemesis that make it watchable. The main actor is a cop who has a wild side. He is very cocky but gets the job done and will take any kudos his way. Part of his personality may be due to his troubled past that never was resolved. He goes to Thailand to pose as a fighter. This being the only way fit to find the filmmakers. Who are responsible for the making and distributing of snuff movies. The risk is very high since the star in the movies is a murderer in the films. This makes the cop-turned-fighter even more motivated but he still lacks the proper skills to fight Khan (Billy Blanks). Jake(Loren Avedon) learns his ego won't get him very far with his true goals. Knowing this he must train very hard with a man who knows a thing or two about Khan's strengths. Also may have the mind set and right tools to beat him. The man goes by the name Prang. He is played by (Keith Cooke). Prang is touted as a Master fighter by locals. He is also in hiding. He has a funny way of initiating young Jake. They become friends and prepare Jake for Khan. You'll also notice things like Prang looks barely 22 and Jake looks not much older. Khan looks like he's around 27. It's a 90's Martial Art movie so it is not meant to be taken seriously.
ebiros2 This is another Loren Avedon movie in the same vein as the No Retreat No Surrender series.Jake (Loren Avedon) is a narcotics officer working in New york. He's a loose cannon, but a good officer who's expert in martial arts. He gets recruited by the Interpol to go undercover in Thailand. In Thailand he's supposed to infiltrate a gang who sidelines making kung fu videos. Caviat is the kill they show on the video is not fake. The star of the video Khan (Billy Blanks) has killed Jake's brother, so the investigation is turning into a grudge match for Jake. Jake shows off his talent at a kick boxing gym. One of the man at the kick boxing gym tells Jake a man named Prang (Keith Cook) can help him get prepared to fight Khan. Jakes seeks Prang out. He asks him to train him to be ready for a fight with Khan. Surprisingly good movie that has good story, and good visual. Loren Avedon has really become a good actor over the years, and he carries the movie as the lead character. One of the best movie starring Loren Avedon, is recommended for viewing.
Joseph P. Ulibas The King of the Kickboxers (1991) was another U.S./Hong Kong co-production from N.G. and the other folks at Seasonal Films. Like most of N.G.'s productions, the kung-fu films that usual come from Seasonal are cheesy with a heavy dose of high energy fighting. That's what I like about his films. He doesn't even try to be serious or make an attempt to elevate the source material. This film is no exception. An arrogant fighter is given an assignment to find out who's making "real" kung-fu movies in Thailand (like Mexico where life is cheap). He's also intrigued by the mission because of what happened to him the last time he visited Bangkok. Whilst in Bangkok he learns about the presence of a vicious Kickboxer (Billy Blanks). Not only does he get a free trip to Thailand but he can settle an old score. Filled with many references to Kickboxer and parodies of other Seasonal Films productions. King of the Kickboxers is a very entertaining film. The film-makers and the actors seem to be having a whole lot of fun making this one. So sit back and relax. When watching this video gem remember "It's only a movie!" Highly recommended!A
