Ian (Flash Review)This one is a hefty step down the first two Dirty Harry movies, mainly due to drab villains; aside from the blond bimbo. After Harry saves the day while also causing thousands of dollars in damage, he is assigned desk duty. In the meantime, the drab villains concoct a plan to threaten all of San Francisco. Later and back in action, Harry is paired with a female partner who lacks any street experience and the two of them get involved; partner mismatch hijinks ensue. How will Harry manage the threat and his untested partner? Overall, this movie had less of what makes Dirty Harry so great; aside from a couple fun scenes. It borderlined on 70s police sitcom level quality. Let's see if the 4th one recaptures the brash amusement.
Mr-Fusion At this point, Harry Callahan's little more than a barnacle clinging to the SFPD. Yeah, he gets the job done, but how he stays on the force is a miracle. What's funny about it is how quick he is to tell his superiors to kiss off. "The Enforcer" doesn't have time to dwell on such matters, pitting him against both a group of militants and the horrors of Affirmative Action. This is a decent entry into the series mostly because of Eastwood's scenes with mandated partner Tyne Daly. If you enjoy seeing what Callahan will do next, be it the creative to solution to a hostage scenario, or taking his anger out with a rocket launcher, then this is ideal product. What's disappointing is that Daly's pluck is wasted as she's dispatched to the murky fog that is Harry's former partners. Like "Magnum Force", this isn't a patch on the original movie (will any of the sequels compare?), but it's Dirty Harry doing what he does.6/10
murasakiotto The movie's great, the music's wrong, I mean, the music including the main title is too jazzy and light for a Dirty Harry movie. Jerry Fielding is a great composer and had done many good movie and television music, but his style doesn't fit for the Dirty Harry film franchise. This movie, I believe, would had had much better reception if the film score had been done by Lalo Schifrin as the other four films. The film score makes this movie feel unrelated and unnatural to the DH franchise, and feels like watching a different Clint Eastwood action flick. The movie itself was second best other than the first Dirty Harry. Tyne Daly was wonderful, and had good chemistry with Clint Eastwood, though Mr. Eastwood seemed to be a little shoulder relaxed as Harry Callahan compared to the previous films. But this movie has some of the best hard blow quotes by Harry, especially towards Captain McKay.
Michael_Elliott The Enforcer (1976) *** (out of 4) The third film in the series finds Harry Callahan (Clint Eastwood) going up against a group of crazed Vietnam vets who take the Mayor hostage and demanding money for him before they not only kill him but blow up the city. With a new partner (Tyne Daly) at his side Harry must try and find out who the group is.This here is quite as good as the previous film but it's certainly still a winner as everything that makes the series so memorable is on display here and considering it's the third film in the series, it's still rather impressive how fresh the lead character is as well as the story. I think it's fair to say that the story is "B" movie material but it's still very effective and it's certainly good enough to hold your attention from start to finish and of course there are a few twists thrown in as well. This third film gives Harry a female partner, which allows for various sexist scenes that could only work in a film from this era. The different sex really adds quite a bit to the movie since it does get the laughs that you'd expect in certain scenes but it's also a refreshing take on the genre. By this time the Dirty Harry character was already iconic so the toughness of that character mixed well with the female officer here. It certainly doesn't hurt that Eastwood and Daly have so much chemistry together. The two of them are very effective in their roles with Eastwood clearly at ease playing this tough-as-nails cop who doesn't everything his way. The supporting cast also offers up good performances from Bradford Dillman, John Mitchum, Albert Popwell and Harry Guardino.THE ENFORCER contains all the elements that made the first two films great entertainment. Of course you get a pretty simple story of good versus evil but what makes it so well here is how it's set up. The opening sequence is downright violent and the cold-blooded nature of this group just makes you hate them to the point where you can't wait to see Harry get revenge. The film also offers up some pretty exciting action sequences including one of the great foot chases ever captured. Add in the top-notch cinematography and the great jazz score and THE ENFORCER is another success.
