Reviews
LouHomey From my favorite movies..
BelSports This is a coming of age storyline that you've seen in one form or another for decades. It takes a truly unique voice to make yet another one worth watching.
Melanie Bouvet The movie's not perfect, but it sticks the landing of its message. It was engaging - thrilling at times - and I personally thought it was a great time.
Beulah Bram A film of deceptively outspoken contemporary relevance, this is cinema at its most alert, alarming and alive.
KissEnglishPasto ...........................................................from Pasto,Colombia...Via: L.A. CA., CALI, COLOMBIA...and ORLANDO, FLSHOPGIRL, sadly, turned out to be quite a disappointment to me. Steve Martin is one of its three protagonists; here he is also credited with the screenplay, making an adaptation from his own novel of the same name. I have always been quite a fan of Steve Martin and his films. However, SHOPGIRL left me rather perplexed. In its story-line development, it is meticulous and detailed and, as a consequence, is rather plodding and, for lack of a better word, "slow".SHOPGIRL imparts the viewer with the constant sensation that something transcendent is just about to happen. A kind of "perpetual-motion expectation", which, when it finally does take place, ends up being utterly anti-climactic. In all fairness to SHOPGIRL, at least in one sense or another, this is, more often than not, precisely what we experience in real life! But the painful inconvenient truth here is that there already have been too many movies that have shared this "secret" of life with us. Quite frankly, one more appears to be just one too many! Unless you are a world-class Claire Danes and/or Steve Martin fan, you'll be much better off if you don't let yourself get involved with SHOPGIRL. 4* ...ENJOY/DISFRUTELA?!?!?!
richieandsam SHOPGIRL.I had never heard of this movie before I saw it on TV. Normally I would not go out of my way to see dramas... don't get me wrong, I like all kinds of genres of film... but dramas are not at the top of my list. The reason I watched this was because I saw it had Steve Martin in it... I love Steve Martin... the man is a legend! This movie was OK. It was not brilliant but it was entertaining. The story was OK. It was about a lonely girl named Mirabelle, who works behind the counter in a shop. She meets a guy named Jeremy in a laundrette and they go out a couple of times until she meets millionaire Ray at her shop who asks her out... she then leaves Jeremy to start a physical relation with Ray. Ray has commitment issues and Mirabelle has to choose whether to stay with Ray knowing there may never be love in the relationship, or be with Jeremy who is basically a bum but does love her.I have to say that the casting for this film was perfect... I was never a big fan of Claire Danes, but she was brilliant in this.My favourite character in this movie was Jeremy played by Jason Schwartzman... Jason was absolutely brilliant. He made me laugh so much in this film. Jeremy is such a weird guy and comes out with such random quotes... but they were awesome! I love this guy!And then you have Ray... played by the legend that is Steve Martin. He played the part really well... I actually felt sorry for him.I will give this film 6 out of 10.The story was average, but the cast and characters were perfect. For more of my reviews, please check out my Facebook page:http://www.facebook.com/pages/Ordinary-Person-Movie- Reviews/456572047728204?ref=hl
butcherofasilkbutton A sublimely tedious film! sit back and p*ss away two hours of your life staring deep into Steve Martin's Navel. The last and worst of the noughties movies about randy middle-aged men getting off with young cute young girls(American Beauty, Lost in Translation). But whereas the former can occasionally ascend to the state of bittersweet farce and the latter eventually becomes a meditation on the dislocations and absurdities of its backdrop setting, this movie never takes a step outside the small island nation of Steve Martin's ego. All this would make the film boring. But what makes it really gut wrenchingly awful is the directors crow-barred insertion of really loud and melodramatic music. I think the director thought she was Jean-Luc Godard. Please, please don't waste your time with this film!
lottta This might be the best American movie I've seen in a while. Has this specific atmosphere which makes it quite slow, and yet not boring. The cast is pretty good. Steve Martin is great in his role, but Claire Danes is even better in her role of young shop girl at Saks, but also an artist trying to find some meaning in her life, or love. Martin plays Ray, older rich man, who is attracted with this young woman who seems to be in her own world, or just lonely. But he is lonely, also. And seeking for something, but that is not love or closeness. They get involved, but it doesn't end well because of his fear of closeness. Characters seem quite quirky, but also real and like they are telling us there are many depressed and lonely people or weird people (character played by Jason Schwartzman), but why not give them a chance? I really don't know why it is so low rated, but believe me, it is worth of watching.
