Smartorhypo Highly Overrated But Still Good
Dynamixor The performances transcend the film's tropes, grounding it in characters that feel more complete than this subgenre often produces.
Chirphymium It's entirely possible that sending the audience out feeling lousy was intentional
Yazmin Close shines in drama with strong language, adult themes.
ovidiu-stofor To praise Meryl Streep, winner of three Academy Awards, but also the most nominated Oscar-winning actress in history (18 times) seems a little tautological - embellishes any role. I'm going to praise Amy Adams - she's plays so natural that you forget it's Amy Adams; especially with this hairstyle. Pleasant film, with two women in different epochs, with different temperaments but with the same passion - cooking and disseminating cooking information.
andrewfleming-57891 Why its good: Enjoyable plot, watchable at any time, funny at parts, great music and Meryl Streep is great. However, there are some problems: The Julia plotline is a bit too weak to merit as much time as it does. There are one or two periods of very long narration by Julia which verges on annoying due to her over the top nature. Also, disappointing in the sense that the two characters never actually interact which leaves the film feeling more like two seperate films rather than one big work.
SquigglyCrunch Julie and Julia is the story of two women who love to cook. Specifically, it follows Julia Child in the years leading up to the publishing of her bestselling cookbook, as well as Julie Powell who starts a blog dedicated to her cooking all 524 recipes in Julia Child's cookbook in one year. When the movie started I worried. Meryl Streep as Julia Child was extremely frustrating to listen to, with her high voice and over- the-top acting. It was genuinely bothersome and I prepared myself for the worst. When Amy Adams came on screen, however, I figured maybe half the movie would be good. I'm happy to say that Streep grew on me as the world around her was made more authentic than previous, thus making her overdone personality fit right in. Plus I remembered seeing a Julia Child cooking video and realized she acted like that in real life. As for Adams, this is one of my favorite performances from her. She nailed her character so well, and her story was all the more intriguing to watch because of that. Speaking of which, contrary to common opinion, I found Julie Powell's section of the movie to be much more engaging than Julia Child's. Sure, I enjoyed Child's part, but Powell was a much deeper and more engaging character, so her parts were a real treat. It was something of a letdown when Child received so much more attention than her, with portions of her story stretching on far longer than Powell's. One thing that both stories captured so fantastically, however, were the relationships. Both Julia and Julie have authentic relationships with their on-screen husbands, which was something I really didn't expect from a movie described by critics simply as a 'feel-good movie'. I found myself captivated by both relationships, and when things went sour I hoped for the best. Overall Julie and Julia is an authentic, well-acted movie full of heart and just enough humor. In the end I would recommend it.
Kirpianuscus if the performance of Meryl Streep is far to be a revelation - the role of Julia Child seems be result of osmosis -, Amy Adams is a real nice surprise. not for the acting itself but for the inspired manner to use the nuances of a role who , in easy manner, could be covered by the work of Streep. her energetic art who gives a vulnerable, dreamer, neurotic ,seductive character is one of great virtues of film. the second pillar, Stanley Tucci's job. minimalist, almost discreet, support for an explosion of energy and projects, he is the perfect Paul Child. this is the basis of a lovely film, wise mixture of biopic, humor, romance and food who reminds, in many scenes, old recipes of Hollywood.sure, the collaboration between Nora Ephron and Meryl Streep could not have other result but the charm of a story about struggles, sacrifices and bitter joy is almost a precious gift for the public.
