Comwayon A Disappointing Continuation
Marva-nova Amazing worth wacthing. So good. Biased but well made with many good points.
Smoreni Zmaj "Heavy Metal 2000" is a worthy successor to 1981's "Heavy Metal". Made in the style of the original, it has a strong reminiscent of the eighties. Unlike the first one that is an omnibus, this one has only one story, but the story and characters at the level of the first movie. There is a bit less nudity and violence, and the soundtrack, although weaker than the one from the '80s, has several really good tracks, performed by the great names of its time. Those who loved the first should likewise love this one.7/10
suite92 An ordinary space miner named Tyler touches a shard of a glowing rock that gives him a hunger for power and a thirst for immortality. He attacks a space colony, Eden, to kill people and collect survivors who have a precious substance in their blood. Unfortunately for Tyler, he kidnapped Kerrie, but left alive her sister Julie. Germain was in his crew, but when Germain tries to protect Kerrie, Tyler leaves Germain behind.Julie dragoons Germain, and they follow Tyler on his journey to a jump point. They hitch a ride just before Tyler's ship enters the wormhole (the 'jump point'). Tyler tries to kill them. The results are really bad for both ships. They crash on a nearby planet where Julie meets Odin and his rock-like assistant. Odin is in search of the 'Key' (the glowing rock) which Julie is oblivious to.Tyler becomes leader of a local race of lizard people. He searches for the pool of the pure substance that will give him immortality. Odin leads Julie to Tyler's ship, where she rescues Kerrie. They go back to the city that protects the pool and the chamber of immortality. Will Julie and her new friends be able to protect the city from the lizard horde? Will they keep Tyler from his goal? -----Scores------Art/Animation: 6/10 Varies from barely competent to good. It seems a bit weak for a film made around 2000. Also, the use of mixed productions modes (some flat, some hand drawn, some done by export of 3d modeling) is rather distracting.Sound: 8/10 The sound levels might have been a bit better balanced. The metal background music seemed to be kept too low compared to the sound levels for gunfire, explosions and voices.Voice: 10/10 Michael Ironside, Julie Strain, Billy Idol, and Pier Paquette were all fine.Screenplay: 7/10 The twin quests for revenge and for immortality move the story right along. However, the story lacks the powerful heart and heroism of the first film.
Dave from Ottawa Having seen the original Heavy Metal about 12 times, I was excited to hear that they were doing a sequel and that it would be a full length feature. The magazine format of the original had been one of its more troublesome aspects, thanks in large part to the clumsy framing device of the evil Loch Nar. Still, the gory fight action, hard rock soundtrack and nude scenes made for a pretty original viewing experience, especially for a cartoon. And Heavy Metal's subsequent influence on anime and other sci-fi long ago assured it of significant cult status. The sequel film, however, proved to be something of a disappointment. The character design and background visuals are quite good and the action is smoothly animated, but the story line is derivative and lacks imagination. Given all of the not-yet-filmed stories in the history of genre literature, yet another revenge for murder plot line seems totally unnecessary, and the addition of a fantasy story hook about a nasty villain searching the galaxy for a source of unlimited power is just a meretricious add-on. I found myself enjoying the look of the movie, while being bored out of my mind by its paint-by-numbers story and weak dialog. Approach with caution and keep expectations low.
rams_lakers In the age of bad sequels, bad remakes, and wannabes.....Heavy Metal 2000 ranks (reeks?) high on the crap meter. You can't hope to equal a legend, and this one falls way short of the 1981 flick. Oh, how they try to parallel some ideas, like a warlord chick who likes to fight in bars and likes to get naked, a bad guy with an elongated jaw, and a dug up green glowing light mainly because they can't think of original ideas. Much of the nudity in this cartoon could be called "forced nudity" - where they really don't have a good reason to have it but want to add it in merely because they can. That sex-bot was totally lame, it had no place in the story other than an excuse to get nasty. The little rock alien's lines were stupid. "Ohh you're soft," he says to the femme fatale heroine. He repeats that she's soft again a minute later for those who didn't get it the first time. Great writing!! NOT!! The villain was annoying, I'd much rather have a cool steaming Darth Vader or Rutger Hauer type than some anonymous big mouth. The warlord chick couldn't act, in fact this whole cartoon fell short on acting ability. The character animation was lame, I felt like I was watching after-school cartoons from the 90s. People just DON'T move their heads around to different positions while casually talking! It's evident throughout the movie that these second-rate animators just HAD to have movement by every living thing in every scene. Sometimes a still character works in a scene, they don't have to be gyrating all the time like they were suffering from ADD. Again, the head movements while talking - highly unnecessary! Use a head thrust to accent a strong point, not every time the subject speaks! The backgrounds were awesome, the smoke was awesome, other than that - it wasn't groundbreaking at all. Characters walked as stiffly as they spoke. There were some in-betweens skipped during the walking animation. Original HM features rotoscope in the final feature, which blows this to shame. These newer animators need to study Disney. The story itself was weak. The music sucked, and did not match what was going on in the film. The animation got tired after 30 minutes. Another reason why the original worked was because before you got enough of it, the animation was passed to a different style. Billy Idol's voice - was this done just to add some sort of 80s legitimization? I give this piece O crap wannabe a 2 of 10. Avoid at all costs. Heavy Metal 2000: meet Blues Brothers 2000 - at the bottom of the Wal-Mart discount bin.
