Reviews
Diagonaldi Very well executed
Infamousta brilliant actors, brilliant editing
Teddie Blake The movie turns out to be a little better than the average. Starting from a romantic formula often seen in the cinema, it ends in the most predictable (and somewhat bland) way.
Phillida Let me be very fair here, this is not the best movie in my opinion. But, this movie is fun, it has purpose and is very enjoyable to watch.
nowego This is one of those movies I have on my must watch again list and have seen it numerous times, it never gets old.Being a fan of Stephen King, Kathy Bates, Jennifer Jason Leigh, David Strathairn, Christopher Plummer and John C. Reilly, probably, but not necessarily helps, the story is just that good. It is a classic Stephen King book I read in a very short period of time without putting it down much.It is also a Stephen King novel that has been adapted to the screen very well, unlike others novels he has written. Probably because it features only real people who most could relate to in real life.Kathy Bates is outstanding and probably up there with the best I have seen with her in the starring role, Misery would come a close second even though she got an Oscar for it, rather than this one.Early on some would regard this as a very dreary movie, which it probably is, just ignore that and continue watching all the way through. Don't give up half way, it is another genuine Stephen King masterpiece and you will be rewarded for persevering.Solid 8/10
talisencrw This one tends to get ignored when people consider the 'classic' Stephen King film adaptations (the first 20 years), but it's very subtle, nuanced, and is basically one of King's finest and more mature works. If it was even possible for Kathy Bates to out-do her Oscar-winning work in 'Misery', she still did so, and nailed it. I'm a huge fan of John C. Reilly, Eric Bogosian (why 'Talk Radio is my favourite Oliver Stone movie and 'Under Siege 2' my favourite Steven Seagal film), David Strathairn, Christopher Plummer and especially, Jennifer Jason Leigh, and the Tony Gilroy script serves them beautifully.Unfairly, I tend to joke about director Taylor HACKford, but it just may be that he's a more contemporary model of such versatile directors from the past as Norman Jewison and Robert Wise. That's fairly esteemed company--and here, he abides himself quite nicely in some of his best work.
celticharp1984 A brilliant mix of scenes' that come together to tell a very unique story; its not for the faint-hearted but its an important story to tell. It includes a good deal of profanity, sexual references and brief violence. It's a masterpiece that is extremely underrated, it contains the same atmosphere as Stephen Kings Misery, The small town with a close community that has just the bare necessities and is still happy to survive. Family challenges are abundant, and that's what makes this film so special as In the end the family bonds that have been tested to endurance remain between Mother & Daughter. I actually called my own Mother after the movie just to say hi.
begob Mother and daughter get to grips with the past.Hmmm. Old-fashioned flasher-back with swooping violins. And a right old Stephen King cheesefest - but with one outstanding element: Kathy Bates. A beautiful actress who brings this story to heights it almost doesn't deserve. Like Nicholson in The Shining. No idea what it is with King - his stuff attracts some real film talent. The daughter's performance is a real weak link, but what ya gonna do with the ridiculous trial scene toward the end? The detective is good, and the wealthy widow too, and it's charming to hear all those Maine accents. The skies looked great, and there's a lot of praise for the eclipse sequence, but I thought the masking of the dying man's cries by the flotilla's horns was more dramatic. There is one forced moment of horror, with the perverse reflection in the mirror, but really this is just a folksy family drama - which runs maybe 10 minutes too long.Overall, one merit: Kathy Bates Kathy Bates Kathy Bates.
