Based on the true story of a Russian serial killer who, over many years, claimed victim to over 50 people. His victims were mostly under the age of 17. In what was then a communists state, the police investigations were hampered by bureaucracy, incompetence and those in power. The story is told from the viewpoint of the detective in charge of the case.

Marva-nova Amazing worth wacthing. So good. Biased but well made with many good points.
dkent-60009 This is one of the best murder mysteries that I've ever seen. If you're drawn to the macabre in films, you must see this one. Its pacing feels very slow, reflecting the tragic nature of the true story. Still, inside that apparent slowness much action occurs. Never energetic action like chase scenes, but the actions taken to solve the case. The film seems to crawl, but you're not bored. The depiction of the 1980s Soviet system is interesting and there are a couple of scenes that deal with the emotional pain experienced by the main investigator (Rea) that are very moving. How this wonderful film has never gotten significant adulation is beyond me. I guess that is because it was a made-for-TV movie.
djderka What is is brilliant about this story is the persistence of the lead detective to find the killer.Interestingly the Commissar said that 'there are no killers in the Soviet Union, that is in decadent western societies" Of course we all get the point. But here in the mid-west in a college town in a lefty book store of the the owners actually said that crime in America is because they are a capitalistic empire. Some left wing ideas never die. Now, back to the movie, it was great and the quips by the Colonel and his astute observations or Soviet society were appro. In fact, most Russians found ways to work outside the system. But my favorite scene was when they caught Chilikto He is in a park and children are playing the the plain clothes police come up on him from the sides, front and back and tell him to 'keep walking'.. One of the most brilliant arrests I have ever seein. The opposite of course of our cops yelling for him to get on the ground and every manner of gun pointed at him.Great film.
phd_travel This is a clear, straightforward and well acted movie about a Soviet serial killer over 50 women and children in Rostov in the Soviet Union. Some killing is shown but it's not too graphically violent showing what needs to be shown for the story but not more.Stephen Rea and Donald Sutherland as the Soviet investigators put on mild Russian accents which adds authenticity. The production captures the bleakness and despair of a Soviet city of the time. Very interesting insights into the ideology and Soviet thinking and bureaucracy of the regime. Especially how these things interfered with catching the killer earlier. It's amazing how they actually had the killer and let him go. The almost primitive methods they had to use to catch killers is quite shocking.Well worth watching for the culture difference.
Thanos Karagioras "Citizen X" is a movie that it will leave you speechless. It is a really good movie and it's worth seeing. It's also a true story relating of a Russian serial killer who kills his victims, he killed 52 people and 35 of them were children under the age of 17.This movie is really a good because it shows us how the USSR worked and how ware the relationships between the simple people and the people of the party. It also show us how the same things changed after the disruption of USSR.In this movie I liked very much the interpretation of Stephen Rea as Lt. Viktor Burakov and Donald Sutherland as Col. Mikhail Fetisov. I think Stephen Rea made his best interpretation in this movie. Max von Sydow as Dr. Alexandr Bukhanovsky made an also good interpretation. This movie it really worth seeing...
