Reviews
Manthast Absolutely amazing
Dynamixor The performances transcend the film's tropes, grounding it in characters that feel more complete than this subgenre often produces.
Bessie Smyth Great story, amazing characters, superb action, enthralling cinematography. Yes, this is something I am glad I spent money on.
Leoni Haney Yes, absolutely, there is fun to be had, as well as many, many things to go boom, all amid an atmospheric urban jungle.
Nydezsh Honestly, this movie was one of the best movies i seen. its something the whole family cold sit back and enjoy. The actors in this film did not over act they did an excellent job on acting this out. The thing the caught my attention the most is how you teens such as myself can connect to this movie. Its not one person i know that would mind watching ATL for a second time. Overall i loved this movie and i see why it won best film in 2006 on the BET Awards. Atl is a suspenseful movie ,but funny at e same time not only did this movie have a moral too it, but it was also enjoyable too watch. I think the film wasn't perfect of course everyone could use some critiquing but it was not the worse film either. Lauren London becoming a new actor had did a great job at this movie. i couldn't even tell she was a rookie and T.I being a rapper also brought fans too this movie.
tedthumb ATL a movie with heart. It did not try to be over the top. It told a deep story about family bonds and love. Drug dealing and crime where shown in their true light. One part that stuck with me was seeing the young brother selling on a corner then he gets rolled by older dealers for his drugs. Perfect song was playing in the background. Great bit of directing there. T.I. and the actor from Forrest Gump have chemistry. I felt that uncle and nephew bond. I liked seeing a movie about life in a tough neighborhood that was about relationships. It wasn't a story about drug dealers only looking to make money. This was real life beautifully told.
l9rae I went in thinking this was another hood movie, when actually it's a very emotional and artistic coming of age story. It captures southern culture without fixating on the violence and poverty of it. T.I. was very impressive as Rashan, a strong silent type with much talent and dreams to boot. Evan Ross makes his debut as Ant the mouthy little brother, and has a surprising presence for a first timer. My favorites were Veda and Star the twins, totally straight from the block chicks down to the colored streaks in the hair to match every outfit. The story was well written by Antoine Fisher and the characters very entertaining and well developed. The skating very well filmed and great to watch. This movie is definitely worth seeing! I only gave it a 9 because I didn't want it to be over at the end. I hope there is an ATL 2.
njonny-1 I really don't understand the low user rating for this film - the number of "one" ratings is unnaturally high, suggesting that there was some sort of campaign to skew the rating lower. ATL is a very good movie, despite it's rather clichéd plot. It's made with energy and style and an obvious love for the characters. I was especially impressed by the movie's complex understanding of how these characters talk and interact with each other. I'm kind of a sucker for this kind of movie (I was also a fan of The Wood, a much lighter and brighter version of ATL), so I may have "over-rated" it slightly - but believe me, it does not deserve its current 3.7 rating.
