Through painfully honest and emotional moments, the movie becomes irresistibly relatable

Other than the great Christopher Heyerdahl the acting in this show is very sub-par. The female lead, all the youth/child actors and Johansson stand out as especially bad in this. The fight scenes are done poorly, the blood/gore effects and CGI are below average compared to other modern shows in this genre. The writing is not bad but pretty thin with not very involved story lines other than murder/revenge/rescue plots. Skip this one unless you're a huge vampire fan who wants to see every film and series in the genre.

The cringe factor of this show increases with every episode. After sitting through season 1 in a suspended facepalm position, I started watching season 2 because some said it was going to be improve. But it's getting worse. It's a continuous string of potholes and unimaginative writing. I cannot fathom who comes up with this nonsense and what goes through the head of the people pumping more into this farce. Is there really no better material out there and, above all, better writers with sufficient talent and imagination to put together a cohesive and engaging plot? The premise of this show is actually not too bad and the production itself is also passable: good sets, costumes, camera work and editing. On that end everything is OK (and I think that's why I have made it through this show as long as I did) but holy donkey, the story is one convoluted mess and with every minute it develops I just wish that all the characters die die and the show comes to a quick end. How can they get characters so wrong? Pretty much all the leads suffer from an extreme form of lack of common sense and decision making skills. It's not a sign of a good script if the viewer just wants top slap those characters for being complete idiots instead of sympathising with them. And what do the writers do to redeem their leads? They make the villains even worse. Take Sam, for example. He's not scary nor entertaining. He's simply an annoying side-kick who has nothing to offer. Every time he shows up I feel ashamed for the writers that they could dream up such an embarrassment of a villain. He's like the Joker's red-neck cousin who suffered a severe stroke. The fact that nothing about the story is even faintly original has been covered elsewhere. What a train wreck..

Walking dead - started to annoy the hell out of me after a few seasons. It was gratuitous smashing skulls - then wash and repeat. It seemed like absolutely nothing else happened. In Van Helsing though - there's a lot more going on. There are dumb zombies, there are vampire types of different persuasions - human groups good and bad and even a good serial killer collecting fingers.Occasionally shocking bits of bad acting and bad dialog make you laugh - but on the whole it's enjoyable.

I am not familiar with the graphic novel upon which the tv-series is based, but the whole affair reeks of a blatant rip-off from The Walking Dead, and a smidgen of Game of Thrones....with less budget.I watched the whole 1st season. What a slog, crawling -in a snails' pace- through about every Walkin Dead trope the writers could think off. Apocalyptic world made with some cardboard car-wrecks here&there. check. At least one character has to die every episode. Check. there has to be treason by a character You'd "never" thought treasonous (riiiight) Check. The 'heroes' have to battle paranoia and the results of idiotic choices..check, check & check.Oh, and don't forget the age-old trope of may, many "survival" series -and a fair bit of Star Trek- the "to-good-to-be-true-comune-of-peace&tranquility" -episode. Really?? Ugh!I gave it 3 stars for of cinematography here & there. On Blu-Ray some of it looked exellent, though some of the outdoor scenes looked a tad too much like Fallout-4 with an ENB that cranked the coloured fog and saturation to the max.And the story? Forgettable Vampires take over the world and Buff... ehh, sorry Ms van Helsing, as the vampire killer in chief, will save it while searching for her daughter who -how predictable- SPOILER!!!!!!!..is turned into a vampire, as revealed in the lst episode. Oh, as is the "hero marine boy"/SPOILERdouble " ugh".All in all, a nasty combi of ripped-off story telling, unsympathetic cast, and trodden-to-death tropes and cliche's.Tip: Avoid!
