Wuchak RELEASED IN 2010 and directed by Mark Steven Johnson, "When in Rome" stars Kristen Bell as Beth, a busy unlucky-in-love woman from New York City, who finally meets the man who can take her mind off work while vacationing in Rome (Josh Duhamel). Unfortunately Beth impulsively takes four coins from a reputed fountain of love, which magically attracts four suitors she doesn't want (Danny DeVito, Will Arnett, Jon Heder & Dax Shepard).Speaking as someone who doesn't view many romcoms, I found this one quite watchable. I'm not too familiar with Bell because I've only seen her in two other films and they were minor roles ("Burlesque" and "Scream 4"), but she easily carries the movie with her star power, although she looks like she could use a few hamburgers.The movie puts its best foot forward with the kinetic first act, which mostly takes place in Rome and is the most humorous part of the movie, and sometimes hilarious (e.g. the "Cherry Pie" joke). The mid-section loses steam a bit as things get too mushy, but the movie perks up again in the last act. There's a memorable comical episode featuring a compact yellow European automobile. Jon Heder's magician character, Lance, is the most engaging suitor while DeVito's character (eventually) arouses sympathy.THE FILM RUNS 91 minutes and was shot in Rome, New York City and Santa Clarita, CA. WRITERS: David Diamond & David Weissman. ADDITIONAL CAST: Anjelica Huston plays Beth's humorless boss while Peggy Lipton & Don Johnson play her parents. Kate Micucci and Bobby Moynihan are on hand as the potential couple's best friends respectively. Alexis Dziena appears as Beth's sister.GRADE: B

D Paterson-Watts There's a lot of negative reviews on here about this, I'm just really glad I watched the film before reading them!! Sometimes a film asks you to suspend your disbelief. The very premise of this film is so preposterous as to not be out of place in an animated Disney film, so I find it incredible that more people didn't watch the film with that in mind. It has an excellent supporting cast, all of which hit the mark, fans of Napolean Dynamite will be delighted, and the leads are really good, Bell in particular.Sure it's not ground breaking (rom-coms almost never are, by their nature we usually have an idea of what's coming), but it's full of fun and it's been made well, with enough substance and humour to keep you going til the end - unlike some rom-coms with much higher ratings. I would recommend checking it out if you like to lose yourself in fantasy and you're a fan of the genre

chrisandshia Nick was adorable. Beth was kinda dense for taking coins, would she like someone to rip her wishes from a fountain?The most upsetting things to me in the whole movie was Nick's friend who needed a shave and a hairdresser-I wanted to strangle my t.v every time he was on screen-although if Jack Black had played it- it would have been cute.The restaurant in the dark was very funny. I cannot believe people would eat in the dark- I have trouble seeing in daylight.The magician guy was very annoying. He was just like a talking mime or something. Again I gritted my teeth.Even the man driving the stagecoach was annoying. Can't anyone not say "Dude?".Lastly- did Beth not play with a helmet on? She should have spotted real love from Nick and fake from the others.Beth's story about Picazzo was probably one version that was supposed to be true. I heard through a source people don't want to hear- that Van Gogh cut his ear off because Picasso refused his love. And he threw himself down a flight of stairs. Also lastly- I do not think Nick's painting was artistic or sad- my grandmother was an artist and I have seen lots better that she painted.What was up with that Liza Minelli looking secretary- who I could have gotten very upset because of her taking the coins-what a busy body.As much as I complained about the people it was a very good movie.Also, what was up with Anjelica Houston. She was so mild and sweet in the Addams Family movies. Damn, she was a monster.The most laughable thing was the little car- that was very funny. I was glad Nick stayed his handsome charismatic self all the way to the end.

kwraikarn Really. The cast is great, but not in this. Angelica Houston, Danny Devito, Kristen Bell, Josh Duhamel... it should have been at the very least OK. But it was SO bad. Painfully so. Embarrassingly so. I love romantic comedies. I watch them almost religiously. I watch almost every release that can claim, even loosely, to be a romantic comedy. I love the silly banter and the eye rolling, I love the predictability - I was very disappointed that Jennifer Aniston and Vince Vaughn's characters didn't get together at the end of the Break- Up. I felt cheated. But this film had NO magic, NO chemistry, NOTHING but cringe-worthy slapstick and oh... painful... embarrassing for all involved.Avoid at all costs, or watch it, to understand how bad it is.
