kai ringler first off i've never seen The Children's Hour or the play so i can't make comparisons between the two,, i watched this on TCM and i thought that this film was just wonderful, it starts a little slow but it picks up a lot of steam once it does get going.. the film is about 2 women who try to make it one their own without help from their parents or any relatives,, well one relative decides to tag along and be a constant but insky. they eventually have to hire her on at the boarding school that they are running for girls.. a doctor comes into play for the two woman,, one of the woman likes him very much and they get a relationship going,, well the other woman also likes this man , but he doens't know it,, and she doesn't tell her friend,, things are going fine at the boarding school until a couple of girls start spreading vicious rumors and innuendo,, a threat is made,, a bully is born and there you have it,, a great classic movie that really should not be missed,, i wasn't to famililar with all the actors and actresses in this movie , but the one actor i am familiar with,, he has a small role but it's really funny , and that's the taxi cab driver,, Walter Brennan,, watch for his performance it's hilarious.

pajjote2001 My favorites are actually Cary Grant, Ingrid Bergman, Katharine Hepburn and Gary Cooper. So having These Three as a favorite movie may not make sense since none of these stars are in this film. BUT - the film is great - simply put. Joel Macrea, Miriam Hopkins and Merle Oberon were superb actors. And that Bonita Granville - the villainous child - is incomparable.I've watched this movie many times and each time is an experience. Highly recommended. The plot may be outdated, nevertheless ,if you are able to go past that realizing this was afterall done in the 1930's, you will fall for the film like I have.I am a big, big old movies buff - the black and whites...This film is one of the reasons why I'm partial to those bygone years.

bethelagcy Everyone told Sam Goldwyn that he had to be crazy to buy the film rights to this one. At the time (1930s), the lesbian theme of the play would have made a film version impossible to release. But, Goldwyn and Lillian Hellman came up with a version that kept intact the other central theme (the vicious lie told by Mary Tilford, the young girl played by Bonita Granville and the resulting damage to "These Three" lives). Of interest to trivia buffs is the fact that Miriam Hopkins (known by many as a "difficult" actress in her Hollywood years), who played Martha in this version, was brought back to play Martha's aunt (Lily Mortar) in the later (1960s) William Wyler version, which reverted to the original title of THE CHILDREN'S HOUR, and starred Audrey Hepburn and Shirley MacLaine. That version also was graced by the brilliant performance of Fay Bainter, who played Mary Tilford's grandmother. Watch her especially closely as she exits, after making her (rejected)apology and offer of restitution. Want a real treat? Read Hellman's script for the Broadway play ... and then watch both film versions, in either order.

sugar-bear This movie was awesome!!! A spoiled brat named Mary is nothing but badness. She torments her friends and spreads an ugly rumor about her teachers. Now the school has shut down and the teachers face some hefty fines all because of this nasty little rich girl. The ending is what took my breath away most of all. Margaret Hamilton(The Wicked Witch of the West in The Wizard of Oz)plays the little girl's grandmother's maid. When the grandmother realizes Mary has been lying all along she tells the maid(Hamilton) to send her up to her room. The little brat gets feisty with the maid, or at least TRYS to, and regrets it. Hamilton delivers one of the worlds most painful face slaps in the history of film. When she slapped Mary I couldn't help but cringe. There was NO sound effect and there was NOTHING fake about that face slap. It was genuine and REAL!! Another reason no one should ever mess with that woman. Even Dorothy knew she couldn't mess with her. But this movie was great. The young girl who plays Mary does an excellent job and I must say deserved an award. She was really convincing in her role and so was everyone else.
