Very interesting film. Was caught on the premise when seeing the trailer but unsure as to what the outcome would be for the showing. As it turns out, it was a very good film.

It's a mild crowd pleaser for people who are exhausted by blockbusters.

Mostly, the movie is committed to the value of a good time.

Let me be very fair here, this is not the best movie in my opinion. But, this movie is fun, it has purpose and is very enjoyable to watch.

The different "worlds" and side characters/monsters we get to see are both cool and sometimes really creepy, and the way the story and everything is built up do give an engaging puzzle video game-vibe. I especially liked how unsettling some of the characters were, bad guy or no.Unfortunately, the main characters are one dimensional and truthfully not very likable, only looking kinda good due to the fact that the antagonists are so much worse. The most memorable of the main 3 kids is "Kai", and that's because you just can't understand why the others keep holding on to him.
To make a reference to another Netflix-animated show, Kai does remind me of Lance from "Voltron: Legendary Defender" at the very most basic cornerstones: girl-crazy, easily fooled by a pretty face, mess up a lot, have inferiority issues, quick to start a fight, boastful and emotionally driven. But Voltron dove into this character and gave him arcs based on his emphatic strength, letting him speak out about his insecurities, protecting and building relationships with the other characters and being visibly emotionally vulnerable (not to mention have typically feminine interests which leaves a pleasant surprise to his character) which all in all led to a relatable fan favourite. The Hollow, unfortunately, does none of that. Not only is he picking fights and being rude to his "friends", he is also cowardly and blames others for his mistakes. You're waiting and waiting for his issues to be addressed, but they never are. His only redeeming quality, as a character, is that he is funny in the way he keeps messing up.
The other characters are just as badly written, but so bland that you have a hard time even guessing a personality outside being "the good guy".The character animation is another point in which I am disappointed. It's fairly standard (a little boring, not that good looking) for an north american cartoon in this day both in design and animation, but the impact this series plot tries to make is really lowered by the how non-dimensional they are. Motorcity (2012) is a show which uses similar character-models, but have a completely different impact due to the color setting and how well these characters interact with their surroundings. Using shadows, light and colors you can make big changes in the mood, but in The Hollow the characters have the same templates all throughout the show. The most startling flaw of the series however, in my mind, is the live action ending. Mixing live action and animation NEVER works out good.

As an animator I try and watch new shows as they come out, and The Hollow was no different when it showed up on my Netflix feed. As it started, I was cautious. I've seen a lot of puppet animation done poorly or just to save time, but Slap Happy really put their hearts into it, and it shows. The story mixed a lot of themes that I love, and in a way that really mimics what I wish children's programming had more of in general. The story kept me extremely interested, and even the plot points I expected kept me engaged. The sound design was also beautiful, I admire whoever put the time into the music and ambient design on that front. My only issue was the very end, it was just very abrupt and made it feel like the plot and character development was rendered nearly pointless. I still loved the show, and would love for more like it to be made, but I just wish the ending had been crafted with the same care that the rest of the series seemed to be. I still loved it, and it's definitely worth a watch though. If anyone who worked on it is reading this, keep it up!

The premise of this show was interesting - three kids wake up in a white room, not being able to remember anything, even their names. Together, they have to find a way out of a strange world that includes witches, minotaurs, and even fire breathing dragons. Oh, and along the way, they also discover they each have strange superpowers. All in all, the show was able to keep me entertained. There were enough mysteries to keep me guessing, and it had a cool and creepy atmosphere. The art style was nice and the animation seemed decent enough. I also liked that the character designs were all distinct from each other, it made the characters stand out.The one complaint I have is the ending. In the last few episodes, we learn that the characters were trapped in a video game. We also learn that there is a competing team of gamers, who seem to know much more about the competition than the main characters. After the main characters have finished their last task, the scene turns live action, and we see kids on a game show stage. They were never in any danger, the mind wipes were part of the competition agreement, and the powers they got were part of a character customization aspect of the game. To me, the change to live action was really jarring, since we had been engaging with this world in 2D the whole time. We could have switched to a 2D game studio and it would've been much less awkward while still getting the point across. The ending was a bit disappointing on the whole, and I felt like the mysteries were much more interesting than the answers, but I wouldn't have been quite as bothered if it hadn't switched to live action. All in all, despite the ending, I would recommend the show. If you want something to binge, it's a fun time, even if the ending isn't great.

The Hollow operates in the same pacing and logic (or lack of thereof) of a dream, things come and go quickly, the world around is a mystery and nothing really makes sense, and that might be a deal breaker for people that wanted a long and compelling story, rather than just a fun ride. The art style is a bit ugly, but it is in no way lazy and the animators do their best.
The biggest let down is definitely the ending, regardless of what you wanted it to be, or if you already knew early on, it is very hasty, and very very very poorly made, and it has one of the things I hate the most in animation, it just made me cringe and almost ruined the show. The entire time I was thinking "this is one of those shows that really starts at season 2", but after that ending, I'm not sure it will or if I care.
Still worth watching if you have free time, just don't bother if you find yourself not liking the characters, staying to find out the conclusion alone is not worth it.
