ChicDragon It's a mild crowd pleaser for people who are exhausted by blockbusters.
filippaberry84 I think this is a new genre that they're all sort of working their way through it and haven't got all the kinks worked out yet but it's a genre that works for me.
Asad Almond A clunky actioner with a handful of cool moments.
wilson trivino America is the land of dreams and riches. For Ram he is stagnant as a dance instructor in his native India. He decides to seek his fortune and move across the pond to the USA. When answering an ad for a movie he discovers quickly that is for a porn movie. Unable to rise up to the occasion, he seeks the sage advice of porn actress Sharonna (Heather Graham) and she sets him on a journey of the joy of sex. Ram then coverts this new knowledge into a role of a sex guru, where he begins a rise up to fame and fortune. Mixed in with a tad of Bollywood glamour, this movie is cute and shares the message that it all works out if you stay true to yourself. Marisa Tormei, Michael McKean, and Dash Mihok round out the cast.
richieandsam THE GURUI had seen this around on DVD before, but not really showed any interest. I am not a Bollywood fan and the cover of this film makes it look very Bollywood. But even though there are a few elements to Bollywood in there it is not Bollywood. The movie is about an Indian guy who leaves India to pursue a career as a Hollywood actor. When he moves to the USA he gets a break in the movie industry by starring in a porn film… this doesn't work out but he does form a friendship with a porn actress who takes him under her wing and helps him get into the porn industry… little does she know that the information she is giving him he is using to trick everyone into thinking he is a Love Guru. People are listening to his advice and he starts getting recognised for it.This is a romantic comedy but not like many others. The story is really well written. It has the typical elements of all romantic comedies, but this has a fresh feel to it. The comedy is well done, but not really laugh out loud. There were a few moments which I did laugh to, but generally the film was just amusing and fun.The characters were really well played out. The characters were believable and also likable. Sometimes I find that in these films the characters can just be annoying and not really well done. I like to connect with the characters in the film, and in this it was good. The main character was played by Jimi Mistry. He was very good in this film and I am surprised that he gave up the big movie dream to end up in Coronation Street. I thought he was better than that. Other great performances in this were by Heather Graham and Marisa Tomei. Heathers character was just complicated. Her character was just very weak and seemed confused. Marisas character was just annoying, but not in a bad way. She played the part well and had some very funny moments. There were a couple of funny musical numbers in this movie. They were unexpected and seemed out of place, but somehow worked really well. It added the Bollywood feel to the film and did make me laugh. The only part that I thought was a little out of place and did not belong in the film was the very last scene. The last scene really had me scratching my head as to what was going on. It didn't make sense and didn't belong in the film. I didn't get it.It was an entertaining film and a lot better than I thought it would be. I will give this film 7 out of 10."I talked to a real live pornstar... and she sounded naked!"for more reviews, please like my Facebook page:https://www.facebook.com/pages/Ordinary-Person-Movie- Reviews/456572047728204?ref=hl
Neil Welch British Indian actor (and unofficial Nicolas Cage lookalike) Jimi Mistry plays an Indian dance teacher who comes to the USA to gain fame and fortune as an actor and, through a series of misunderstandings, happenstances and other improbabilities, becomes a sex adviser guru, spouting half-baked self-help platitudes which are fed to him in all innocence by Heather Graham's highly unlikely porn actress. The suspension of disbelief default level is set quite high with this one, but the likability of the characters helps to make it achievable. There's nothing terribly unusual in the plotting or scripting, but the background and setting generally is fairly original.Jimi Mistry is good, Heather Graham tries hard but comes across as fairly vapid, and Marisa Tomei is excellent (and looks great in her underwear). There are some mock Bollywood musical sequences which are quite good fun, and the whole thing is fairly light and amusing.
caa821 I don't attend that many movies at a theater, but if I hadn't seen the preview for "The Guru" while attending to see another movie, I probably would never even have heard of it. But the preview piqued my interest, and after stopping to see this film when it came to town, I was very glad I did. It is a fun story, and has one of the qualities I particularly like to see in a film: a totally-engaging, likable cast and characters portrayed. Jimi Mistry is excellent in the title role, and Heather Graham and Marisa Tormei are beautiful and enjoyable, as both normally are. Michael McKean gives his usual fine performance, as do the supporting cast, both American and East Indian. We all probably should maintain a better "look-out" so as not to miss movies like this, which appear with little fanfare - especially in view of the significant proportion of "9-figure," 2nd-rate productions, which regularly come onto the scene with far more trumpeting than merited.
