Day in and day out, lovers Cynthia and Evelyn enact an elaborate sadomasochistic fantasy as mistress and maid. But as their ritual of domination and submission begins to turn stale, Cynthia yearns for something more conventional, while Evelyn tries to push their taboos even further.

quridley Duke of Burgundy takes the concept of old sadomasochistic lesbian movies and digs deeper to the psychology of its characters. The director is trying to do what the legendary Jess Franco and Jean Rollin often did with their lesbo shockers, but he is not as successful. But its a wonderful experiment that works on many levels. The cinematography are acting are very sharp. The plot is thin and not much action takes place and it all could've been a much better short film, but its well written and directed anyway. The most interesting part of the film is the suggestion that lesbianism is a kind of fetish and psychological crutch for emotionally damaged people. He likens its roots to the roots of S&M. This is a very controversial angle in our modern times, but I think its refreshing. Duke of Burgundy is not a sentimental, pandering or fetishistic examination of its subjects. Its a very cold and analytical one. And its interest and sympathy for its characters are more pure than the films that inspired it. I only wish it was as exciting and entertaining as Vampyros Lesbos or Rape of the Vampire. But maybe it wouldn't work as well if it was as exploitative.
Kerryanne Okezie The story of a middle-aged woman, Cynthia, a wealthy academic who lives in her home with her lesbian lover. Both women appear to have personality disorders that do not appear to have been diagnosed. Cynthia has severe control issues and Evelyn appears to be an enabler; both of them feeding off the other while role-playing a sadomasochistic creepy fetish. It was interesting to see the madness that goes on in these type of domestic abuse relationships - but especially the twisted reality of mental illness and how any form of abuse if not dealt with can turn you into a monster. The director did well to tell the story of the hidden horrors in these types of relationships and there was a scene toward the end of the movie that really showed the character, Cynthia, revert to her inner child and place of pain. There appeared to be an improvement in their relationship after that. Good directing but the story was under-developed leaving those great scenes a little confusing and incomplete.
M MALIK duke of Burgundy 2014 is one of the worst films of 2014 its just a lame lesbian perverted fantasy filled with cheap thrills in the name of erotica nothing more.i have seen plenty of soft core porn films i can easily say they have much better hot scenes then this one.no doubt the film is cinematic it the camera work is amazing but the whole idea of this film sucks i like lesbian film but this one sucked for me cant say about others this is my opinion.the story is about a women who collects butterflies meets another female who is a servant later they are attracted to each other have sex & their relationship turns into a never ending sadly sexual soap opera.the whole film from start to finish is boring the makers wanted to present this as a art film but failed, the characters are not interesting at all specially the leads both of the actresses are beautiful but script does not do justice the dialogs are written by kids i guess.the cast got wasted here Chiara D'Anna & Sidse Babett Knudsen do their best they look sexy but thats it where is the good character conversation & dialogs the only good character of the carpenter is played by Fatma Mohammed the moment she appears on screen in the black dress she stole the show.i like depressing movies but this one was trying to hard to make a impact visuals alone just don't make a great project you have to relate to audience & give a good plot.i just could not connect with this film i have no problem that it runs to long but damn it was boring the only thing this film reminded me of was the Terrance Stamp old 1960s film called The Collector & trust me thats only because of the butterflies.and there is not a single man seen in this film not that i wanted to see some hot scenes between a man & a woman but this so called lesbian film have nothing to offer i mean where is the hot scene these women were just smelling each other.overall this film is a waste of time & money don't watch it even if its given to you for free, try some Stanley Kubrick movie any day but stay away from this.this film is a biggest fraud ever there is not a single erotic scene here the blue is the warmest color was way better then thisMy Rating for The Duke Of Burgundy is 2/10:Skipp it
Josh Friesen On the surface The Duke of Burgundy is about two lesbian entomologists in a repetitive and ritualistic S&M relationship, an homage of sorts to 70's soft core euro trash. However, where those films would be voyeuristic in their depiction of such a relationship, stressing the erotic strangeness of the situation, The Duke of Burgundy cleverly does the opposite. As we are more engrossed in the world of the film, the strangeness of the two central characters begins to fade away. The world they live in contains no men, and the presence of travelling S&M saleswomen give the impression that this sexual behaviour is also the norm. The surface is stripped away to reveal a complex and nuanced metaphor for the everyday sacrifices we all make to maintain romantic relationships. If that isn't enough to sell the film, there is also a hilariously deadpan discussion about human toilets.
