Huievest Instead, you get a movie that's enjoyable enough, but leaves you feeling like it could have been much, much more.

jimbo-53-186511 When a team of Navy SEALS learn that there are millions of dollars worth of gold which was stolen by the Nazis from the French and has been submerged in a lake for 50 years, they decide to help a woman who tells them of this secret in a bid to help her use the value of the gold to rescue her war torn country...It became clear to me at a very early stage that Renegades was not a film to be taken seriously and I suspect many of those that have rated it negatively have not realised this and have not been able to accept this film for what it is; it's basically a goofy heist film which merely uses war as a backdrop to frame the story. Right from the off this film is fun; lots of inane, but often amusing exchanges between the SEALS, endless rounds being fired (with the good guys always hitting and the bad guys always missing). Sure a lot of what you see here is nonsense, but for the most part it is entertaining nonsense.In many ways, it's a good job that I did find many aspects of the film to be enjoyable because the film does have its fair share of weaknesses. Although there is a sub-plot involving our SEALS being pursued by a group of angry Serbians it always feels rather inconsequential to the main 'heist' plot and this aspect of the story lacks any real tension - in fact truth be told I could have done without it all together for all the purpose that it served.The acting lets the film down ever so slightly as well; Sullivan Stapleton is basically playing the same character he played in Strike Back (but again this could be seen as being fun if viewed in the right context). None of the other SEALS really make much of an impression and it's basically left to the ever reliable J.K Simmons to show everyone else how it's done (which he does with ease and once again gives a 'show stealing' performance).I can understand some of the criticism levied on this film; it isn't as intense or exciting as a lot of war films and heist films - although I did like the way this film tried to combine the two genres. The acting for the most part isn't great (with the odd exception to the rule). However, I did get the impression that the film has a certain self-awareness about it and that the filmmakers kind of know it isn't great, but made it fun in a trashy disposable kind of way. Yes it's flawed, but I kind of liked it anyway.

First they spoil you with a tasty opener. After which a well-filled middle piece is offered. And then as an enjoyment afterwards, you're offered a delicious dessert. Satisfied you'll leave the establishment and you'll remember this treat with great pleasure. Other films are like a cozy family picnic. It's relaxed and pleasant. No extensive preparations are necessary. And when you look back on it, you think of the cosiness and life values. "Renegades" is like the McDonald's. You are served very quickly. You're eating it as quickly as possible (it's fast food, remember). And before you know it you've already forgotten what you have eaten and hungry again.There's also something positive to say about this film. The short performance of J.K. Simmons, acting in the same way as when he scolded his students as a music teacher in "Whiplash", is magnificent. And the underwater footage in the second half of the film, looks beautiful. And finally, the Bosnian girl (in real life the Dutch actress Sylvia Hoeks) is a pleasure to watch. If I had to choose between her and a nice dish filled with cevapcici, I knew what I would take. Quite obvious that she can convince a group of American Navy Seals to dive for a Nazi treasure in a lake in Bosnia. Or was it the gold bar that did it?Although this film is of the same level as that of an average television film, it's entertaining enough full of action-packed scenes and with a feel-good ending. The fragment with the tank is pure enjoyment. It looked like a modern episode of "The A-Team" with MacGyver in it for some assistance. I'm sure nobody would even know this movie if they had left out the well-known actors. But at least it would have been a little less expensive and the turnover would have been more positive. If you have a package of popcorn laying around and a little time to kill, this film is definitely worth it. But just like with the MacDonald menu, the next day you can't even remember what it was about anyway.

howarddaniel-93387 This movie started off well then deteriorated quite quickly. Apart from the goofs mentioned in the goofs section, two Navy Seals kicking the arses of about 4 SAS men? Really!! If you can turn off your brain and watch with your mouth open then its ok.

nebk Renegades is a badly written and mostly poorly acted action film about a special-ops team trying to retrieve hidden nazi gold from a war torn Bosnia on 1995. Apparently the nazis hid the gold in 1944 in a small town and the town was completely submerged in a man made lake. Fast forward fifty years and a special-ops team there on an unrelated mission finds out about the gold and decides to take it. Sounds interesting? Well it isn't. Overall who ever wrote this drivel couldn't do any research about the actual war in Bosnia. The first mission is ridiculous as the team is there to kidnap a Serb general responsible for war crimes...which in reality, no one at the time knew anything about. The mission is covert and yet involves driving a stolen tank through the streets and over a bridge and under water for a bit. The fact that the wanted general has a compound surrounded by a whole army is also irrelevant since they decided to leave a whole side unguarded. The flags used in the beginning also didn't even exist until 2006. Oh, and lets not forget the protagonists having drinks in a bar in Bosnia even though the west never actually had ground troops there during the war. This would be as if there was a war movie made about British Commandoes who were chasing Nazi war criminals who used the flags of West Germany in Austria in 1938 before the war started. Overall this was clearly written by someone who watched The Expendables, The A-Team, some war movies and mashed everything together creating a movie so disjointed and badly made it may cause heartburn to the viewers.
