Reviews
Catangro After playing with our expectations, this turns out to be a very different sort of film.
Hattie I didn’t really have many expectations going into the movie (good or bad), but I actually really enjoyed it. I really liked the characters and the banter between them.
Christophe Excellent characters with emotional depth. My wife, daughter and granddaughter all enjoyed it...and me, too! Very good movie! You won't be disappointed.
Billy Ollie Through painfully honest and emotional moments, the movie becomes irresistibly relatable
Sohan_Composer A serial killing movie where the detectives try to catch the killer but every time they failed & get confused about the murderer. they catch some suspect & start questioning. when you'll watch this movie you probably think that every suspect can be the killer according to their behavior & answers. the main two lead roles acted amazingly. their natural acting will touch your heart & the cinematography will make you think about re-watching this masterpiece. this is a slow paced movie where the story slowly get paced & you'll see the characters will blossom & disappear like flowers, that's what made this movie a masterpiece. at the end of the show you'll question yourself & think about this movie whole day. this is just brilliant ! i give it 10/10.
Rama Subramanian We watch movies to escape reality, Don't we? And very rarely we come across movies that shake you to your core and leaves you in a wreck. What amazes me is that a movie that speaks a language you don't understand and takes place in a country/culture you have very little idea about can connect to you on various levels, move you and disturb you.Memories of Murder is an ingeniously made crime thriller that keeps you engaged right from the beginning to the very end. It is very hard to find a dull moment in the movie. Be it the writing or the acting or the cinematography or the BGM, this movie is literally flawless. It is crafted with such perfection that it is almost hard to believe you are watching a movie. It felt like you are witnessing these incidents unfold, right before you. The wide range of emotions, stress, and pain a detective goes through while handling a case is beautifully portrayed by the two lead actors. Kang-ho Song and Sang-kyung Kim, with their incredible acting skills, effortlessly take us through the lives and hardships of detectives. Though both the characters differ from each other in many ways, we are able to relate to them at one point or other. Asians are stereotyped for having small eyes (there are a couple of subtle references in this movie too!) and it must be an irony that almost all the characters in this movie emote flawlessly through their eyes. The landscape plays an important role in the movie. It sets the tone right from the beginning - Cold, silent, intimidating and vast. The countryside is picturized exquisitely that even though it is subtle at most places, it gives a sense of eeriness wherever it's required and at the same time it kind of comforts you wherever it's needed. The last few minutes is where the movie peaks and leaves you heart- breaking. You can't help but feel for the detectives who gave their everything to catch the murderer but lost to circumstances. The end scene where the retired detective converses with a girl sums up the entire movie and we feel the exact same way as he feels - frustrated, clueless and unfortunate. As he gazes through the screen, we are left with an empty feeling of not knowing what to do after watching an amazing movie.
deensanusi You can never be sure about some of these Korean films and what genre they really are, and Memories or Murder follows the same trend. A deeply unsettling murder hunt, coupled with police that are frighteningly incompetent. Memories of Murder leaves you wondering if this people namely the police can behave in that way? Then you find out this was mostly a true story. A great film in my opinion, that has benefited from my recent love affair with Korean films lately.
tapio_hietamaki Simply put, this is a well-made film. The story is gripping and realistic (and real), the characters are interesting and the actors engaging, the themes are explored in depth, the visuals are striking and original, the music and sound design are immersive, and the 2 hour runtime is expertly paced. It's a tense and thrilling story, a detective mystery with gray morality and no clear resolution, so it will leave you feeling unsatisfied and even scared at the world around you, but it feels real and humane. The central conflict is between two detectives solving a murder case. The older one wants to get fast results and isn't afraid to manipulate the evidence to get a conviction, whereas the younger one is more idealistic and wants to be sure of the killer's identity. But ideals are hard to cling to in the real world, as the movie shows.'Memories of Murder' has great photography. It layers its shots so that there is always something going on in the background, movement and detail and even some kind of mini-story, so I suggest you watch with a close eye.David Fincher's 'Zodiaz' is a very similar film, and a good one, so to fans of either one I recommend the other.
