Gus is a fat cartoonist that recently won a battle against cancer, but due to the aggressive radiotherapy, it has left him Bald, pale, and slightly redundant. Therefore, his caring sister tries to set him up with suitable woman. But to do so, she must turn him into an irresistible man. When he falls in love with Emily, Gus takes the identity of a mysterious biker from New Zealand..........Whatever you may call the film, The Boyfriend School, Mullet on bike, awkward family meal, it's still a poor comedy which only serves to explain why Guttenberg and Gertz have resorted to TV movies of the week, and special guest appearances on shows that have now been cancelled. So Gus feels sorry for himself, the makers feel that it would be hilarious to mock someone who has just endured some of the most painful treatment to one of the most hateful diseases ever known to man, by him having his comedy wig slip every now and again. When the writers realise they have milked the wig joke, they transform Guttenberg into Billy Ray Cyrus, and so goes the hidden identity trope that graced many a comedy in the nineties. There isn't one redeeming factor about this movie. The performance are stilted, situations that should have been slightly amusing fall flat on their face, Long has never looked so desperate in to film before. And it's clear to see where Van Damme got his look from for Hard Target.Advice to guys who's girlfriends love romantic comedies? Don't tell her it exists.......

Loved this movie! Shelley Long is outstanding in this smart, well written, well acted comedy! She created a memorable character who is as hilarious as she is charming. I don't want to short-change the rest of the cast, however---Steve Gutenberg and Jami Gertz were wonderful and had great chemistry together.I didn't even know about this movie when it came out in 1990. Was it not promoted at all? What a shame, and thank goodness for DVDs! All three of these actors should have been in more movies and had more promotion. When I think of some of the awkward writing, wooden acting, and just downright awful movies I have seen over the years, it makes me truly ill to think of actors of this caliber being overlooked.Watching this movie was a lovely way to spend an afternoon!

I enjoyed the movie immensely and would buy it were it available. The premise is arresting: a young man recovering from a near-fatal illness that has removed him from the mainstream of life for years. He meets a young woman who is unattainable for a quiet man. He creates a persona that appears somewhat dangerous and interesting for her and wins her ... then is faced with the problem of resolving appearance with fact. The actors are appealing: Guttenberg is touching as the recovering patient, Long is annoying but loyal as the bossy sister, and Gertz turns lovable as the target of Guttenberg's affections.

I am a fan of romantic movies but this one was sorely lacking. The movie is supposed to be about a guy falling in love with a beautiful girl and then going to extraordinary lengths to get her. Well, my biggest problem with the movie was why he would go after the Jamie Gertz character. Her character is pretty but she's also very shallow. She rejected him for his looks at the beginning of the movie. Her character was not very sympathetic. If anything once he won her over as Lobo he should have dumped her so she could know how rejection felt. Anyhow, if you want to see a good romantic movie watch Cannery Row, Tootsie, Starting Over, or The Princess Bride.
