Terrible acting, screenplay and direction.

One of the worst ways to make a cult movie is to set out to make a cult movie.

All of these films share one commonality, that being a kind of emotional center that humanizes a cast of monsters.

Worth seeing just to witness how winsome it is.

I watched this one on Amazon Prime under the title CHARLESTON & TRINITY. It's a straightforward copy of one of the successful Terence Hill/Bud Spencer comedies that were all the rage back in the 1970s. The story is episodic and features a small-time scammer going up against some big-time hoods, occasionally aided by a muscle-building priest. As far as genre standards go, this isn't one of the best. Too much of the screen time is occupied by cheesy romance material that goes nowhere. Spaghetti western stalwart Giuliano Gemma take on the Hill role but doesn't have much depth to his character, occasionally smirking and running around a lot and that's about it. The unknown Swedish actor Ricky Bruch is much better as the hulking priest even though this was his film debut, and the brawling action of the climax excites and entertains, even if the rest of the film is strictly average. Once again, THE STING seems to have been the main source of inspiration for the Italian production crew.

This film has the typical air of Italian action/gangster comedies from that period. I guess one needs to be a true fan of this style but then it is a perfectly charming and funny sort of comedy. The acting is not too important anyway but still it is reasonable and enjoyable. The cliches of black and white are wonderfully maintained in this movie as the good guys are clever and witty and the bad ones are bad and pretty dumb. I considered the "Shakespearian" dream of the "good" Mafioso a bit stupid but then a film like that seems in need of a few blunders. The costumes are great. All in all enjoyable.
