Logiebear42 I was a Huge fan of the Asterix books when I was about 5-6 and as I re-read them throughout the ages, I learned more, Understood more and enjoyed it more. I've vowed to never read the newer books for fear of ruining such a good childhood experience. I've heard talk of aliens in the newer ones *shudders* And so, It was with much trepidation that I picked up a copy of Asterix and Obelix from my video store. With even more trepidation, I watched it.As a Die-hard fan, I can tell you this: You will enjoy this movie, warts and all.The books have been recreated to some of the minutest details imaginable, It really is incredible what a good job they have done.That being said, There are warts. Quite a lot of them. The visual effects aren't on the great side, The CGI is far from flawless. Also a couple of moments felt like they departed too far from the original idea.The storyline is a combination of several Asterix books, plus some new elements. so even though I mostly knew what was going to happen, there were a couple of surprises along the way. Some were good, some bad. It all depends on opinion really.The humor is good, I highly recommend the English overdub as it doesn't just translate the movie, but makes it a hell of a lot funnier. There is a lot of slapstick comedy, well executed mostly.To conclude: This movie isn't perfect. It's not a masterpiece and it won't win any awards. But this I can say; If you read the books, enjoyed them, understood the humor and can bear a little tackiness - Then you WILL enjoy this movie.

AwesomeWolf Version: French audio, English subtitles (by SBS) It had been years since I read any Asterix books or seen the animated films when 'Asterix and Obelix vs Caesar' popped up on World Movies (an Australian cable channel specialising in foreign films). I had no choice. I had to watch it. After all, Asterix was, and always will be awesome.It is the peak of the Roman Empire, and Rome rules over nearly all of Europe, save for one little village in Gaul. A group of Roman soldiers led by Lucius Detritus (Roberto Benigni) has made numerous attempts to subjugate the village, but our heroes Asterix (Christian Clavier) and Obelix (Gérard Depardieu) foil all attempts (with help from Getafix's magic potion...). When the villagers embarrass a Roman tax-collector, Julius Caesar (John Gottfried) becomes personally involved in the campaign to take out Asterix and co. for good.'Asterix and Obelix vs Caesar' was incredibly funny. I had no expectations about how would it fare as a comic-to-film transfer or how it would stack up against the classic comics. I hadn't read Asterix in years, so I really couldn't expect anything. but after watching it, I have to say that the only thing that could beat watching Roman soldiers be thrown around in a live-action is reading the Asterix comics again. The sets, costumes, and special effects could be better, but this is still a very fun movie. I've previously recognized Gérard Depardieu as being "that guy who turns up in movies that I have to watch for a history class", but after his role as Obelix, he may just be one of my favourite actors.'Asterix and Obelix vs Caesar' is an enjoyable screen interpretation of the comics. I thought it was great, and it introduced my little brother to Asterix. He has since picked up a few Asterix books, I should go read them now - 8/10

dafyd This film is a genuinely brilliant live-action translation of an (arguably) unfilmable classic comic book series... Claude Zidi's writing and direction are top notch, and the main characters as played by Clavier and Depardieu work extremely well.The English translation, on the other hand, is awful. When I saw the film in England having already watched it in France, I was, frankly, embarrassed! Terry Jones relies too much on direct translations and gags that don't fit... perhaps they should have used Bell and Hockeridge, the hugely talented translators of the actual books. Oh well.I definitely recommend the film, though, albeit only in the original French. Don't worry if you don't speak a word of the language; you'll soon pick up what's going on, without the experience being spoiled by the abysmal English dubbing.

lornajapan Although people are saying that the actors didn't capture the essence of the characters, I thought that most of them did! The only exceptions are Getafix, who didn't look at all wise, just demented, and Vitalstatistix who wasn't egotistical enough (Impedimenta was too tall as well). I thought Geriatrix and his wife were perfect, and Christian Clavier (who was also in the marvelous Les Visiteurs), was hilarious (especially when he got a spider in his mouth!) I have read all the Asterix comics, and I thought this film captured the essence perfectly, although, I agree, it would have been cool to see the pirates!10 out of 10!
