    Supelice Dreadfully Boring
Baseshment I like movies that are aware of what they are selling... without [any] greater aspirations than to make people laugh and that's it.
Billie Morin This movie feels like it was made purely to piss off people who want good shows
Lidia Draper Great example of an old-fashioned, pure-at-heart escapist event movie that doesn't pretend to be anything that it's not and has boat loads of fun being its own ludicrous self.
princekatt I learned there was far more "Sex & Nudity" than the Parents Guide claimed. And that's about it.The ending left me with absolutely no lesson learned, nothing to think about, nothing more than a blank stare and blatant frustration.Mildred Pierce. Hardly a main character. Hardly a character at all. You'll find that being in every scene doesn't make you a character, simply a prop. She does not grow. She does not learn. She actively follows what she knows is bad for her. Willingly walks into the most stupid things, I can't even begin to tell you.. You begin to believe she enjoys being hurt. She pretends to be angry one scene, and then acts as if nothing happened the next, even apologizing or doing favors for the other person who is clearly garbage and has admitted to ruining an important part of her life. Clearly never picked up a book on parenting, but then again those books don't lecture you on sociopaths.. However, you would think after years of dealing with that monster, she would have some kind of idea that said monster was.. as I said.. a monster, right? Not keep trying to "make it up to her" as if her daugher were an angel? I acknowledge some mothers can be naive when it comes to their children, but not like this. This does not make for an interesting character. Only a flat, detestable, and insufferable doormat tripping you into a most unsatisfting ending. Only until the very last scene does Mildred LOOK like maybe finally she's got the hang of it. Maybe she SHOULD let her daughter go. Want to see this phoenix rise at last? Too bad, the series is over.
shari-827-880711 I've watched the original many times and I've read the book at least ten times. This version strayed a bit from the original but was so very good. I would watch it over and over. I missed a certain character which i don't want to mention as a spoiler. All in all, A STRONG remake. I loved it. Kate Winslet was amazing, amazing and Evan Rachel Wood was spectacular as Veda. Watch it!!!!
bluerider521 I have not read the book, but I have read that this adaptation was quite faithful to the book. The classic movie was not; it was made as a melodramatic murder mystery with Joan Crawford as a Grand Dame Mildred. Thus, the movie was great entertainment, but as a life lesson, as a cautionary life story, it was nonsense. This version was far superior as a story the average person could identify with. Great sets, clothing, cars, even minor period detail. I'm glad I saw it and I would recommend it to others, but...It does really drag in places. I appreciate what I learned about opening a restaurant, but such detail only slowed down a story which was mainly about other things. While the camera lingers on Veda, and lingers, and lingers, little attention is given to explaining Mildred's developing financial problems. Emotional explosions may go on too long.I'm glad that this miniseries was made. I wouldn't have wanted it made any differently, but quite a few people will find it tedious.
preppy-3 This takes place in California from 1931 to 1940. Mildred Pierce (Kate Winslet) throws out her cheating husband and is left on her own to bring up her two daughters--Ray (Quinn McColgan) and Veda (Morgan Turner and later Evan Rachel Wood). She struggles to make a living and bringing up the two girls. She succeeds but she has this inexplicable love for Veda that eventually leads to tragedy. This was praised to the high heavens when it premiered on HBO. It was nominated for multiple Emmy awards and won one for Winslet. She is incredible, the rest of the cast is OK, it looks great and is well-directed but it's way too long. This did not need to run over five hours! This easily could have been done in two or three hours. As a result this is slow-moving and quite frankly boring. My finger was on the fast forward more than once. Everything is so drawn out it gets annoying. Worst of all Mildreds obsession with Veda is never clearly explained. WHY does she go to such ridiculous lengths to make sure Veda is happy and satisfied? It never makes any sense. It's suggested that she has lesbian tendencies for her but that comes out of nowhere and is never explored. Basically this is an over long, drawn out and boring mini-series. Winslet is great but not good enough to make up for this length.
