In the Warsaw ghetto in 1943, Jews rise against the Nazis.

Reviews
Myron Clemons A film of deceptively outspoken contemporary relevance, this is cinema at its most alert, alarming and alive.
Lachlan Coulson This is a gorgeous movie made by a gorgeous spirit.
Darin One of the film's great tricks is that, for a time, you think it will go down a rabbit hole of unrealistic glorification.
Francene Odetta It's simply great fun, a winsome film and an occasionally over-the-top luxury fantasy that never flags.
Petri Pelkonen Jewish people living in the ghetto in Warsaw during the second world war decide one day in 1943 they have had enough. They are going to fight back. They get some guns against the Nazies and start killing those bastards.Jon Avnet's Uprising (2001) is a really gripping TV movie.I actually saw it in four parts. The acting is superb.Hank Azaria plays the leader Mordechai Anielewicz and he's very convincing. The way he portrays the rage and all...Only a good actor can make you believe those feelings are real.A good actor does not act at all. David Schwimmer as Yitzhak Zuckerman proves he can be so much more than just Ross Geller of Friends.Leelee Sobieski is brilliant as Tosia Altman. The two legendary actors, Donald Sutherland and Jon Voight are both fantastic.Sutherland gives a mighty touching performance as the Jewish Adam Czerniakow.Voight does the part of the Nazi Maj.Gen.Jurgen Stroop and he's almost scary as that monster. There are also talents such as Stephen Moyer (Simha Rotem), Sadie Frost (Zivia Lubetkin), Mili Avital (Devorah Baron), Alexandra Holden (Frania Beatus) and Cary Elwes (Dr. Fritz Hippler).Uprising is a movie about hope back in the days a man had turned into beast.Of course the hope does come in a very violent form but that's the only way possible against the ruthless enemy.I myself felt a lot of joy every time a Nazi got shot. This movie gives a rare opportunity to see the Jews win.At least for a while.
marvopolo I saw this film in Australia with a relative who survived the Ghetto uprising. He said that, in spite of some inconsistencies, it was as accurate as film could portray it. While it is true that there was more than one resistance faction, and sometimes they were at odds, the essence of the event is portrayed well. The Polish Resistance's attitude was mixed, but my relative, who was a courier in and out of the Ghetto said that many individual Poles risked their lives to hide him. The woman who escaped with the baby at the end of the film is also related to me. Her husband, who was killed in the first days of the uprising, was a major planner and organizer. Of course, it affected me greatly since my mother originally came from Warsaw and I lost many relatives.
cashute3 I voted 9 out of 10 for this movie....'cause it WAS inspirational...I thought Schwimmer was brilliant enough to pull off that role...I was truly surprised by his abilities....OK so the movie was a bit off for accuracy but so what..maybe the polish resistance uniforms were wrong ....or were they ?....don't forget, those people had to get whatever clothing was available at the time, and that wasn't much, in fact anything they could put their hands on was close to a miracle...I thought Jon Voight was OK too, but not brutal enough to portray the real Jurgen Stroop, the administer of many unspeakable cruelties in the Nazi regime...should have shown him hanging after the war like he really did ( historically true ) ...good Schwimmer......good stuff...
caspian1978 Hank Azaria is the new Rodney Dangerfield. Why? Because he gets no respect! For instance, Hank Azaria is the star of the movie. He does an excellent job with a polish accent. He must have spent months in the gym buffing up for the role and he is in most of the movie. Then again, he is not listed as the lead star of the movie. This honor goes to Leelee Sobieski, whom, is only in no more than half the movie and has very little lines. Then again, she did go nude for about 15 seconds. While you do not see Mr. Azaria's backside or front side, Ms. Sobieski covers some of what God gave her, while the rest is on display for the audience's liking. This is a good television movie. Powerful and entertaining. Still, this movie's fanbase is made up of teenage boys who want to see Leelee Sobieski's 15 seconds of nude fame. Pity, this is a decent movie and worth watching.David Schwimmer
