Excellent but underrated film
Rio Hayward
All of these films share one commonality, that being a kind of emotional center that humanizes a cast of monsters.
Myron Clemons
A film of deceptively outspoken contemporary relevance, this is cinema at its most alert, alarming and alive.

Each character in this movie — down to the smallest one — is an individual rather than a type, prone to spontaneous changes of mood and sometimes amusing outbursts of pettiness or ill humor.

Jena-Paul Belmondo is on leave and goes back to Paris to see his girlfriend, Agnes, who works at an art museum. But, barely given time to turn around, a priceless artifact is stolen and her boss is kidnapped. Then, she is kidnapped and taken to Rio. These bad guys don't know who're they're dealing with. Jean-Paul is on a mission to save her from these goons who are holding her. From one escapade to another, this film does not let up. He follows her to Rio, saves her, goes to find her father's buried artifact (one of three the bad guys want), and then she is kidnapped again! Adolpho Celi, a Bond villain, gives good support as a heavy and art lover. I've already given some of the plot, but the pace and humor and zest of the film can not be told and has to be experienced. It is unreal how much this guy has to endure on his leave - everything from getting in brawls to jumping out of a plane to swinging in the jungles! If you want an exciting and crowd-pleasing foreign film, then stop in Rio and see Jean-Paul saving the day!

I came upon this French movie screening on Sydney's SBS network while channel-surfing so missed the start. Suffice to write that I was hooked by the snappy dialogue and breathtaking photography, so much so that it seemed a shame to vacate my seat until the credits eventually appeared.A handsome lead who can actually act, a beautiful woman who is pretty much crazy, a villain who is charming; add this to the mix and you have one heck of an entertaining movie. There's also a timelessness which helps to make it a genuine classic of the genre. Plus the wonderful supporting cast, many non-actors most likely, who give Rio an instant appeal like no other movie I've ever seen.Let's hope it eventually appears on DVD.

I just love this movie. I don't really know why, maybe it's a nostalgia for an era and time that, like a good Whisky gets better with age. This movie captures the time of the Aero Willys, the VW bug, the DKW's and the Caravelles that is long gone but still lives in the memories of many. The movie and it's plot are OK, but the real Emerald buried in the plain rock are the backrounds in this movie, a Brazil full of hopes and dreams, at a time where everything seemed possible. Pink Jalopies with rumble seats (known as mother in law seats in Brazil), thieves, weathy villians, futuristic architecture, and everything but the kitchen sink blend to make this a fun romp.

This movie is one of the best adventure movies I have ever seen. As a twelve-year old I used to watch it at least once a week on our (to that time) brand new VCR. I think it is the best acting of Belmondo and one of the best actings I have ever seen. An absolutely awesome movie. Pure adventure made in France. Sometimes you can see that Hollywood is not the non-plus-ultra in moviemaking!
