adonis98-743-186503 JR busts out of prison with Brendan Lynch, Australia's most notorious criminal, and joins Lynch's gang for a gold heist that soon pits the two men against one another. Son Of a Gun has a talented and well known Cast but the film's narrative and it's script are terrible when on the same time the characters that we're supposed to care about are boring as hell. MovieHoliks When I first started this crime picture, having heard it was about this crime lord mentoring another young man in prison, I automatically assumed Ewan McGregor was the young man in question- but he's actually the older crime lord. LOL Goes to show he's evolving into more mature roles these days.I'm a big fan of Australian cinema, and really wanted to like this movie. I think I liked the first part of the film, set in prison, the best. I remember thinking- WOW- them Aussie prisons are sure a lot fancier than our American prisons! LOL But then once the film gets out into the free world, and turns into an action movie pitting the young guy against McGregor, it lost me- just becomes another shoot 'em up picture. If you want to see a much better Australian crime picture, I suggest the film, "Little Fish" (with Kate Blanchett, Hugo Weaving & Sam Neill) instead.

movies-by-db A highly enjoyable thriller. Yes it's a heist film, but it's also much more then that. It's almost a Greek tragedy with the first (brutal) act taking place in prison, the second being the heist and the third act the aftermath. This all through the eyes of a young and seemingly innocent protagonist.I loved the pacing, the locations, the characters, Ewan McGregor was absolutely spot on but I also really enjoyed his quiet best mate "Sterlo" played by Matt Nable, a highly believable strongman, and, even though we've seen them many times, I always like the Eastern European gangsters. They do bring extra ruthlessness to these type of stories.It's back to oldschool 70's crime movies and that ain't no bad thing, and the tightly knit crew of charming tough guys even reminded me a little of "Heat". Don't get me wrong, it doesn't compare to that masterpiece, but "Heat" also definitely found it's inspiration in the 70's classics.A feature film debut for this director, I will most certainly eagerly be awaiting his next.. 8/10

chris_shields85 i was a bit worried when i first watched a trailer for this film that it may be cheaply made like some other Australian titles, but gladly i decided to give it ago anyway, and i just want to start by saying i loved this film it had me griped from the moment it started right to the very end. This is not you typical all action shoot em up heist film, instead it is very intelligent and gritty and more what you would expect to happen in real life. i had not heard of any of the actors in this film except from Ewan MacGregor but was surprised at how well everyone played their part. If you are thinking of watching this film then i recommend you give it a go, the only reason i think the film doesn't have a higher rating is because more people wanted a all action film, so stick it on you wont regret it and fingers crossed we see more films like this emerge from Australia
