Jenna Walter The film may be flawed, but its message is not.
aldebaran68 This review contains a Spoiler warning: I am/have been a Greek speaker (not so much now) living in the UK. Learned my Greek in Greece from childhood (sort of family/friends). I always enjoyed the TV series of the same name L&P... because it was set in the 1967-70s period when we used to go there a lot. This L&P; Sirens in the Aegean is a more modern version of that comedy with a different story line but some of the same actors. Still an 'Army Comedy'. Set around the 1990s Crisis in the Aegean around two uninhabited islands of contested ownership in between Greece and Turkey. Hence the title Sirens in the Aegean. I reckon the TV series was the best TV comedy ever produced in Greece. This film is not far off being one of the best movie comedies ever produced. If not the best. It is very well produced. The script is intelligent but still very squaddie like. It combines army and non-army elements reasonably well. There are many genuinely funny lines and scenes as well as serious dialogue re the political and international situation and other matters. It is a good mix of comedy and drama really. It is well worth buying though it can be streamed. Spoiler warning: The only kind of questionable bit, really tiny but it was a bit silly, is when one of the soldiers tells another that a third who is a bit of a 'crack shot' can supposedly hit a rabbit/hare moving at 200m and a goat moving at 400m...with an AK-47... I thought that a little hard to believe, but hey, its a comedy... ! Well worth watching and it stands repeated viewing. The Cretan Greek of the Cretan soldier is priceless to listen to.
george-516 I found this movie a great example of the Greek character and also the nature surrounding it. The story is simple yet funny and very entertaining. Of course the movie is by Greeks for Greeks but I think with subtitles it can gain fans outside of Greece, except probably for the US where one will not be able to understand how a bunch of soldiers are dealing with a simple border incident in one of the most disputed parts of Greece. What is different here is that instead of the soldiers getting drunk and shooting everything that moves, they are getting romantically involved with their captives and entertain them while they are awaiting orders from their superiors.
diamandis80 I wasn't expecting much from this movie. I had heard a lot of positive comments from people who had seen it (some of them twice). Most of the recent Greek films that have come out were a total waste of my time. This one was different. It was funny in a continuous smile kind of way, but there were also moments were it totally cracked me up. The characters are diverse (with the gay soldier and the soldier from Crete producing some of the most hilarious moments). I also liked the fact that the movie tries in a very subtle way to convey certain messages (mainly that Greeks and Turks have more in common than they'd like to confess). I think people of Turkish descent will also find this movie enjoyable. All in all quite a good movie. It goes to show that you don't need special effects if you have good dialogues and scenario.
nikoulini_84 Hi!Thanks for the opportunity that you provide me!I am Greek and i was looking forward to expressing my thoughts about this movie.i have seen LOUFA & PARALLAGI twice, actually.I don't really know why...I do know that it made me laugh several times! The director-NIKOS PERAKIS- shot an amusing sequel even though the original movie was definitely better! The funny thing about LOUFA 2 is that it turned out to be a huge Success in the Greek box-office!It doesn't happen often! The movie includes many talented actors such as IOANNIS PAPAZISIS,VASILIS HARALABOPOULOS,ORFEAS AUGOUSTIDIS and many more! What else?oh yeah!Beautiful Turkish models, handsome soldiers!Yeah...Worth watching!!!BYE
