Voxitype Good films always raise compelling questions, whether the format is fiction or documentary fact.
Chennai Vaasi Loved this movie ! It's a rare gem that portrays humor so intelligently and spins a tale about romance in modern day middle class India. The characters are so well etched that the story unfolds in a very smooth organic manner without sudden awkward jerks. It's an under appreciated film and I give it a 9 if only to improve the film's ratings. If only more films were such subtle intelligent romantic comedies. I found the story and characterization so engrossing, that I imagine others like myself would root for the protagonist, Raghu, and shake their head knowingly at the inevitable outcomes as the three characters play out.My favorite character would have to be Raghu, the commitmemt phobic, confused lover, who loves deeply and is stuck between two women both of whom seem to have some power over him. My second favorite has to be Gayathri, the woman who lives by her own terms, fronts a bold attitude but is every bit a sensitive girl on the inside. She matches Raghu in commitment phobia. One mistake I find reviewers making is confusing the entertainment quotient of the film with their view of Indian morality.Very likely that an inexperienced film viewer who abhors 'western influence' will appreciate a film. This may or may not be warranted depending on the seriousness of the film. But this movie isn't a serious documentary or a social commentary on the state of relationships these days. Rather this is a light hearted film, a romantic comedy with no hidden message or agenda. Enjoy the film for what it is - a merry go round of the jilted, the commitment phobic and the love struck.
Jasrick Johal ShuddhDesiRomance is a very engaging new age romcom.Film has many LOL moments.Film talks about youth's views on relationships, love, marriage etc.SDR is a novel concept, and is a real film of this new generation.Live in relationships are highlighted. Sushant Singh Rajput and Rishi Kapoor EXCEL they create havoc whenever on screen, amazing performances. Parineeti Chopra and Vanni Kapoor are good also. Also in SDR Vanni Kapoors character Tara is a bit weird and unbelievable, her whole speech in the ending was not convincing.Overall a good, different film to come from dir Manesh Sharma and writer Jaideep Sahini.Breaks all romcom clichés.Ending is weak though, not convincing.Youth and all people who want to watch a refreshing romcom that doesn't follow the usual formula watch SDR, its a real film of todays generation X
Anup Chakraborty This Playful Heart Is extremely Random/Unpredictable.. It Cheats and goes Crazy}. The film is a fresh take on how the wavering mind makes and breaks most modern day romances.Relationships these days are perhaps driven more by fears and insecurities of the wishy-washy (read commitment-phobic) 'mind' than by the old world trust and surrender of the heart. But who wants old-world boring ishq when we can have runaway-groom (and bride) drama. (Yep! There are three instances in the film where either the boy or the girl gets a serious case of the pre-wedding jitters and runs from their marriage!)Maneesh Sharma returns to his romantic home turf (Indian marriages) with this one. From Delhi (last movie) we have moved to Jaipur, a more colorful setting but socio-economic-cultural milieu is similar. We have our tour-guide protagonist Raghu (Sushant Rajput) who's busy making successful sales-pitches for overpriced handicrafts to gullible foreigners when he's not playing a 'fake-guests-for-hire' for his wedding-planner Uncle (Rishi Kapoor). He's all-set to marry a good looking-virtuous girl Tara whom he himself has selected (played by debutante Vaani Kapoor). So our groom meets an independent minded free-spirited Parineeti en-route to his marriage (in a bus). He develops cold feet, runs off from his wedding and is gripped by an attraction for the swearing, mild cigarette smoking liberated girl. She likes to live life on her own terms and our hero overcome with much love (or lust or both perhaps) finds himself in a live-in relationship with her. Sexual chemistry is presented matter of fact (as it happens in real life perhaps). It'd be best not to reveal more about the plot.Suffice it to say that the film asks- Does what starts off as physical always turn into love? And what reaches love, does it always turn into commitment? How do you figure out? Shuddh Desi Romance treads the confusing ground between love, attraction and commitment that our next-gen is no stranger to.The cinematography is great and captures a lot of the wonderful sights, sounds and flavours of the pink city(the protagonist is a tour-guide after all!). The songs are also nice. There are plenty of scenes in the toilet (No not just of the steamy kind, Parineeti likes lighting up in the loo!) and certain go-to hilarious repetitive patterns/habits which many of the characters turn to when they find themselves in situations (like Vaani Kapoor asking for a Thanda whenever anything major stressful happens. Yep she simply grabs a cold drink on being told her groom has run away).Rishi Kapoor plays an endearing character who keeps endorsing the positives of marriage because he has his concerns about the kind of impact that the commitment phobic/live-in embracing present day generation will have on his wedding business. The dialogues (By Jaideep Sahni of Chak De! fame) keep things lively mostly with the one-liners. Unfortunately the film loses plot in the second half and things start feeling repetitive and contrived. Nonetheless, the screenplay and the use of monologues (speak-into-the camera by oneself) as a narrative device also work very well.Vaani Kapoor makes a good debut (though her character needed more fleshing out. Her character's idea of "revenge" is to start dating the man who abandoned her on the wedding! And she's an emancipated/liberated woman?? I mean???) Both Sushant and Parineeti are good in their roles. Watch this one only for the breezy first half and the charmingly hatke desi-romantic take.
Ketan Gupta There is a new trend of attracting audience in which Bollywood movies are set in typical North Indian style like Band Baja Baraat , Fukrey , BA Pass. Shudh Desi Romance is set in Jaipur exploring the wedding culture and tradition.Shudh Desi Romance is about wedding jitters , commitment , instant- attraction and live-in-relationship between 3 people - Raghu, Gayatri and Tara. From the fun-filled Band Baja Baraat and mediocre Ladies Vs Ricky Bahl, Maneesh Sharma presents you yet another love and attraction saga that explores the relationship and commitment. The story also challenges the mindset of Indian audience about accepting the live-in-relationship concept which is very much alive in society. The direction was good and few sequences were really remarkable. Apart from that, climax was unconvincing. It messed up so much that unnecessary extension of melodrama as to whom Raghu is going to get married will bore you. Screenplay falters and it goes down terribly. Editing could have been better. Art direction and cinematography is good. Music is mediocre. It is the performance of the film that should be lauded. Right from Sushant Singh , Pareenti Chopra , new bee Vandana Kapoor , veteran Rishi Kapoor were enthralling. It is difficult to highlight anyone in particular but Rishi Kapoor does it again. With age , he is re-inventing himself and that shows in the role he chooses. Overall , Shudh Desi Romance can be touted as one-time decent romantic complicated love triangle which had potential but turned out to be an average entertainment. Decent 2.5/5
