oOoBarracuda To stick with the journalistic theme of Woody Allen's 2006 film, Scoop, it seems pretty clear that Woody Allen was going for a fluff piece here, seemingly having fun with the material. Scoop works, for what it is and is a nice fun outing with the writer/director. With Scoop, we're in London again, with Scarlett Johansson, again, with a character communicating with the dead, again. Maybe I'm not doing a great job of selling it to you yet. Woody Allen can get by with repeating tropes because he does them so well. One doesn't care how believable it is that Scar Jo is getting leads for a story from a dead journalist because it is told in such an engaging way. With an opening reminiscent of Broadway Danny Rose, we see a table of journalists lamenting over a fellow reporter who recently passed away. The table discusses the means he would take to find a story and how desperately he would chase leads. The audience is also blessed with Woody Allen in a supporting role as a magician which was autobiographically fun considering Woody been interested in magic since he was a child. Scoop was a fantastically written film that followed Scarlett Johansson's character as she embroiled herself into a murder investigation all the while getting clues from her deceased side kick.People will talk about the surprise ending of Scoop, and rightly so, it's fantastic. Vengeance is achieved and the character you actually want to succeed does, and that's not common in a Woody Allen film. What stunned me the most, however, is that Woody Allen actually kills himself off in a film. Like Woody, I would like to achieve immortality, which is why no matter how fictional the circumstance I would never "kill myself off". I was stunned that Scoop actually led to Woody facing the grim reaper. That surprising aspect of Scoop ensured that I'd never forget it, the image still burned into my brain days later.
jahan_tanu what would you do if you know u r falling in love with a murderer despite the fact that YOU already knew or u r suspecting?hahaha scary isn't it but kinda fun though....yes woody Allen has done this movie beautifully as he always does....he mixed mystery and thriller with romance and drama and comedy of course.he is quite successful to hold his audience stick to the end of the movie... i m a big fan of woody Allen...so i always love watching his movies...this movie is no exception...he presented mystery with completely a different perspective....i hope everybody would love this movie....& no wonder Scarlett is as always a charmer so she let this movie more interesting to watch.... but sadly didn't find Hugh jackman so spontaneous in this movie as the way he basically is....maybe he didn't have so much to do in this movie....but overall its a complete entertainment....worth my time
leonblackwood Review: This is yet another movie starring Woody Allen were he is rambling on about complete rubbish all the way through the film. The storyline was original but completely silly. Its about a terrible magician, played by Allen, who brings a girl (Johanssen) out of the audience for a magic trick and halfway through the stunt, she gets visited by a dead person who escaped the Grimm Reaper to tell her the true identity of a serial killer. WEIRD! Allen also gets to see the dead person so he joins Johanssen to take down the serial killer. The storyline was really weird but I liked the concept. The main problem is Woody Allen's writing which made the movie more of a silly comedy than a intriguing, murder mystery. Jackman, who plays the accused, had the ability to make his character interesting but the storyline really does go from one extreme to the another. It also didn't help that the film was based in the UK because the rich characters seemed more pompous than interesting. Personally I got fed up with the constant rambling on about trivial matters. I did stick with the film because I thought that it might switch into something serious, but Allen chose to stick with the unfunny theme. Average!Round-Up: With such big names like Johanssen and Jackman, I'm surprised that the budget was so small. Maybe it's because it was made nearly 10 years ago, before Jackman was Wolverine and Johanssen was the Black Widow. Anyway, I personally think that Allen spoilt the movie with his stuttering dialogue and silly humour. I liked Ian McShane, who played the deceased, but he wasn't in the movie that much. I also liked the ending, which was the only proper twist throughout the film, but it wasn't enough to make this film that great. It amazed me that Allen cast Jackman, whose Australian, alongside Johanssen, whose America and he filmed it all in the UK. Jackman does put on a great English accent and he plays pompous quite well, so he blended in with the rest of the English cast. Anyway, this just has to go down as another let down by Allen. Budget: $4million Worldwide Gross: $39millionI recommend this movie to people who are into their drama/thrillers about 2 people trying to work out whose the Tarot Card Killer with the help of a ghost 3/10
scarlett_is_best_waifu OK, let's face it, we all watched it for Scarlett. However, I expected a lot more out of this film than what I got. Half of the time it was serious, and the other half it was trying not to look at the screen when Woody Allen opened his mouth. The plot was very promising, and could have made a classic if it was more similar to "Match Point". If I had written it, Woody's character would not have existed, instead Sondra's partner in crime would have been her friend. If you don't mind very cheesy Woody Allen comedy, then this movie is just fine. Scarlett's acting is wonderful as usual, and Hugh Jackman has never looked sexier (no homo). 4/10 for one of Woody Allen's worst films,+2 for Scarlett and Hugh.
