Livestonth I am only giving this movie a 1 for the great cast, though I can't imagine what any of them were thinking. This movie was horrible
Plustown A lot of perfectly good film show their cards early, establish a unique premise and let the audience explore a topic at a leisurely pace, without much in terms of surprise. this film is not one of those films.
Humaira Grant It’s not bad or unwatchable but despite the amplitude of the spectacle, the end result is underwhelming.
Scotty Burke It is interesting even when nothing much happens, which is for most of its 3-hour running time. Read full review
TxMike I had missed this movie when it came out 11 years ago but now found it on Netflix streaming movies. I like Thornton, he always creates interesting characters. Heder was a big hit as 'Napoleon Dynamite' but didn't do too much of significance after that although he is fine here. Jim Parsons of TV 'Big Bang Theory' fame has a very small role in this movie, I don't think he even says any lines, it was probably made when he was still an unknown.Jon Heder is Roger Waddell in an embarrassing job as a meter maid in New York, and as the story begins we see him being intimidated by a couple of guys he had just given a parking ticket to. He tells his friend the story and the friend promptly gives him a phone number. The phone number has him reach Billy Bob Thornton as Dr. P who, for $5000 per student conducts classes designed to turn them into people who stand up for themselves and can go out and get what they want. Dr. P is just a scam artist but Roger decides to take it all seriously.A pawn of sorts in all this is pretty Jacinda Barrett as Amanda who lives in the same building as Roger. He is sweet on her and decides he will make his intentions known as part of his improvement plan. But Dr. P decides he will try to win her for himself, even though he has a wife. It is mostly silliness in implausible situations. I most enjoyed the tennis outing where Roger was not so nice to Dr. P.
g-bodyl I was reading the reviews for this film and I can't believe how many people are bashing this film. I thought this a really funny film with likable characters. I also can relate to some of these characters which is really rare in cinema. This is about some loser named Roger who takes a self-confidence class taught by the hot-headed Mr.P. As the class progresses, Mr.P and Roger go head to head against each other. As I mentioned previously, I found some of these characters very relatable especially Roger played wonderfully by Jon Heder. Billy Bob Thornton is especially great as Mr.P. Both Heder and Thornton have excellent chemistry. This movie is really funny! The paintball scene is my favorite part of the movie. Also I give credit to the scenes that had Ben Stiller featured. I rate this film 9/10.
wes-connors In New York, dorky loser Jon Heder (as Roger Waddell) gets pushed around at work. And, he can't pick up flirty Australian neighbor Jacinda Barrett (as Amanda Richards). Taking a friend's advice, Mr. Heder enrolls in a self-confidence class run by ballsy Billy Bob Thornton (as "Dr. P."). Then, after Heder learns how to "roar like a lion" and live dangerously enough to attract Ms. Barrett, he finds Mr. Thornton becoming a rival for her affection.A gay subplot involves Thornton's burly henchman Michael Clarke Duncan (as Lesher), who turns out to be sodomizing Thornton's students. One traumatized rape victim, Ben Stiller (as Lonnie Ratcliff), shows up with revenge on his mind. The tennis match damage inflicted on Thornton, and the sock stuffed in Heder's mouth are two highlights. But, director Todd Phillips' "School for Scoundrels" never rises above the usual sophomoric chuckles.*** School for Scoundrels (9/29/06) Todd Phillips ~ Jon Heder, Billy Bob Thornton, Jacinda Barrett, Ben Stiller
sme_no_densetsu "School for Scoundrels" tells the well worn story of a pushover who learns to become more assertive so that he can take charge of his life and finally get the girl. I didn't realize that the film was a remake but the fact that I found it hackneyed to begin with gives an idea of the level of originality we're dealing with here. The cast contains a number of talented and funny individuals but they are unfortunately let down by the material. Looking at the cast list it's difficult to believe that the film is as mediocre as it is. The script just doesn't deliver the goods comedically and the story's too unoriginal to grab your attention. The technical aspect is no better than average either but I must admit that the soundtrack was pretty nifty. In the end, I can only recommend this flick if you're absolutely starved for some comedy. There's little to be had here though those who don't mind clichéd stories may appreciate it more than I have.
