Suvarthi Chaudhuri First of all I would like to congratulate Mr. Kamaleswar Mukherjee for a brave and inspiring attempt. Chander Pahar, the most expensive Bengali cinema till date, will definitely change the course of Bengali cinema in coming years. From cinematic point of view the movie is not anyway comparable to Indiana Jones or King Solomon's Mines or Romancing the Stone. Not even near to those. But we have to remember that it's a Bengali film with a budget of only 15 crore. So it will be unfair to compare this film with any of the Hollywood classics.Plus points.1. Marvelous camera-work. I have to admit that the photography is really stunning and near perfect. Specially the helicopter shots. 2. Direction. Despite a few loopholes, Kamaleshwar Mukherjee has done a commendable job. 3. Gerard Rudolf as Diego Alvarez. I really like this man. His screen presence is more enjoyable than Dev. 4. Background music. Some lack of variation, but appropriate for an adventure in Africa.Weakness.1. Dev's accent. Far better than Paglu, Khokababu etc. But still a long way to go. 2. Volcanic eruption. The CGI is below average. 3. Some variations from the original story. Like, in the original book, the Black Mamba didn't bite Shankar. He put the torch light into the eyes of the snake for three hours. After that the snake moved away. This would be more realistic. Another variation is the Bunyip. The mythical creature. Shankar never killed Bunyip. It remained a mystery till the end. This would also be more realistic and cost efficient. Overall, I like the movie. It's a memorable and entertaining journey which lasts for 2 and half hours. I recommend this film to everyone. Specially for Bengali speaking people, it's a must-see. Despite the flaws, with this film, the Bengali cinema will enter into a new era. And this feeling is making me very proud as a Bengali.
debayankar7 Many of us love watching adventure films, but very few good ones remain in memory.when Adventure combines with the Wild , the Thrill of watching the movie goes up.I am a Bengali person who has read Bibhutibhusan's Novels and other popular adventure stories by Author's around the world.I read "Chander Pahar" when i was in middle school and felt the story captivating . when i heard that a movie was being made in 2012 ,i felt that its a very difficult task to present on-screen.But when the show began i understood that i need not to worry, because it starts with thrilling action sequences and never bores you at all.I also watch Hollywood films and clearly understand the difference in quality but leaving that aside all that matters is how you present a story in front of viewers. Most theaters and multiplexes are going house-full because people wish to taste the thrill , which has been neatly delivered by Director Kamaleswar Mukherjee. The cast of this film seemed to be carved out of the Novel itself . The film also delivers a good morale and describes a long journey without boring the audience. Both the Bengali cast and foreign cast are perfect and the cinematography is spectacular. If you have not watched it yet because you liked "Dhoom 3" , then i advise to watch this to change your mind and experience the thrill "Chander Pahar" delivers
sanjoy117 I guess soon most of the nation would realize that "Chander Pahar" is probably one of the best adventure movies made in the history of Indian cinema,if not the best.I can see that some the posts over here is comparing "Chander Pahar" with "Life of Pi".As a novel, "Life of Pi" is an absolute crap if you compare that with BBB's "Chander Pahar".So,no doubt,"Life of Pi" was more like a child's 3D entertainment. There are a few semi-ripe folks in India who consider themselves as pundits based on their regular viewing of Hollywood movies. They should watch good movies from all over the world.Only then they would realize that if Bollywood movies like "Dhoom 3" are crude junk,"movies like "Life of Pi" is sophisticated junk.Anyways, I don't think that Bollywood can make something equivalent to "Chander Pahar" even if they get 150 crores.Bollywood is busy with "Ram Leelas" and converting Sholay to 3D by spending 25 crores.Wish, some of those Bollywood directors could find some sponsor for grey matter.
Pinaki Ghosh The film brought back the memories of watching Life of Pi. This is a memorable journey of a single man through the wilderness of Africa, from death to life. 90% of the film is very high quality; the quality falling only at two points, the cg depiction of the volcano and the Bunyip monster, which I feel could have been better had the filmmakers got more post production time before release. For the same reason, though there are 5 languages used in the film, it has no subtitles. Overall, the film is a feast of spectacular visuals and stunts. The film has an universal appeal; even a person with no knowledge of Bengali language can watch the film, because there are few dialogs in the entire movie. The film has that element that makes you crave to come back to watch once more.
