At first rather annoying in its heavy emphasis on reenactments, this movie ultimately proves fascinating, simply because the complicated, highly dramatic tale it tells still almost defies belief.

Excellent and certainly provocative... If nothing else, the film is a real conversation starter.

a classic Romanian fairy tale. a Romanian- Soviet co-production. and a lovely film for children. and not only for children. because, after decades, the film remains fresh and amusing and almost perfect. the ballet scenes, the great performance of Mikail Boyarski, the songs and the ice dance are fascinating pieces for a total show. the basic ingredient - science and courage to give the spirit of a special age in the best manner. in same measure, a director who has a long experience in this delicate domain. the fairy tale of Ion Creangă has new and new nuances in this film who represents more than a good musical but a trip in the essence of small fundamental things of life. so, must see it !

Go to YouTube.com folkens.....Several clips in different languages. I too saw this with my kids in Norway in the 80s, had taped it, gave it to a friend when we moved back and her house burned down so it was gone. Saw it again here in Norway several years back. Only writing so much because the rules are at least 10 lines. Those songs were ingrained in my memory, and I am now 57. One of the best family films I have ever seen. But, yes, I would like a DVD of the English version, surely someone who owns the rights will understand there is money to be made, as well as happy children ??? The film industry should understand that children do not need to see blood and guts and weapons to enjoy a movie.

wonderful musical, i have seen the musical for several times on the dutch telly, i was about ten years old.. would like to have the movie on DVD or on VIDEO can anybody help me to locate the movie for me.. it is locked up in my memories for ever hopefully that somebody of the makers read our review and maybe will try to get a new musical for all of the children. I have now children of my own and it would be nice to have the possibility to tell them than there mother had also seen the musical when she was a little girl.. even my husband does not know the musical also for him would it be nice too look some of his childhood memories

I give this a ten. Yes it's partly because I saw it several times as a child, so you do get a bit nostalgic when something reminds you of your childhood. In my case this has also very much to do with the music and of course the universal themes of mother/children and good/bad.When I see this movie as an grown-up, I can understand why this make so much effect on both children and adults. It has everything you can fantasize about. Great acting and choreography, and all the small and great details in costumes and makeup. The actors facial expressions are spot on for the animals they are playing. As a child you connect to them at once. The story is just as clever, funny, warm and a bit scary as you would expect from an old fairy-tale. On top of this you have the excellent music. It has a few melodies that you can remember for 20 years after just one or two listens. It has classical music, a bit rock'n roll, musical like, lullaby, disco, East-European... It never gets boring. This movie just has the magic soul that can touch you and stay in your heart for ever. Not many movies can do that. Not to me at least.NB: Funny how much 'top 1000 voters' are weighted on IMDb :(When I write this, this movie has 7.7 (133 votes). The ratings 1,2,3 and 4 have only 4 votes. 2 of those 4 votes are top 1000 voters. Incredible 70% gives this movie a ten. 94% of 133 voters give this movie 8 or more. Still it's weighted 7.7 only because of two top 1000 voters...
